Defense Day Parade and Program in Vernon

Vernon plans a Defense Day event on Friday September 12 with a large parade and post parade program on the Court House lawn. Schools will dismiss stores close and many civic groups enter more than fifty floats with over one hundred being prepared. First Shipment Cotton Leaves Vernon Saturday

The first shipment of Vernon cotton left Saturday when Harvis, Christian & Ning, a new cotton firm, shipped 40 bales to Houston. Cotton is opening rapidly with pickers in demand. Several bales have been picked and cotton picking will be in full blast in about 15 days.

Haskell County Fair Officials Visit Local Exposition

Haskell County air president Hardy Grisson and vice president Henry Alexander attended the local exposition on Saturday. Vernon Public Schools Open With 329 Enrolled

Students begin actual work as Vernon schools start after a brief delay. Eighth and ninth grades report. about 175 more students enrolled in other grades for a total of 329, smaller than last year, with two more expected today. Classes to be held in the old Nieh school building until the new one is finished, forcing some science rooms to share and some students to work in crowded conditions. Grade school pupils were classified and issued books for the coming year and lessons began.

Burolars Enter Office of Marble Works Saturday

The Vernon Marble and Granite Works office was broken into Saturday night. Papers in the safe were scattered and a few stamps taken. Owner G. W. Backus found the scene Sunday afternoon. rear door broken and office door pried. The safe combination had not been changed for a year after a prior burglary attempt.

Mattie King Buried Sunday Near Vernon

Mrs Mattie King aged 23 died at her home southeast of Vernon on Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 10 o clock Sunday morning from the family residence and interment followed at East View Cemetery. She had been ill for some time and is survived by her husband and two young children.

The Negro Quartet that was to sing at the Baptist tabernacle this week will not appear the management announced. It is impossible to fill the dates as scheduled and the concerts are indefinitely postponed.

Stokes Funeral Held Sunday in Vernon

The funeral of St. T. Stokes, who died suddenly in Houston, was held Sunday afternoon at 8:90 from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. M Batchelor, 112 Texas Street. Interment was made in East View Cemetery. Surviving relatives include Rev. and Mrs R. K. Stokes of Jasper and brothers from Houston Dallas Beaumont and Texarkana. The services were led by Dr. B P Lyon, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and a large attendance of locals attended with many floral offerings.

Twelfth Annual County Fair Closes After Big Attendance

The Wilbarger County Fair ended Saturday night with about 5,000 in attendance as crowds packed the park and streets near the grounds. Highlights included Miss Gentility, a Derby winner now owned by EL PS Waggoner, winning a showcase horse race, a National Guard demonstration, Hassan Ben Abdix vaudeville acts, and a strong opening fireworks showing. The San Antonio amusement midway drew large crowds, and exhibit halls brimmed with visitors before closing late Saturday night.

Methodist Officials Named At Friday Conference

The Fourth quarterly conference of the First Methodist Church named stewards and officials for the coming year. Dr. Robert B.
