Local leaders for a Salvation Army fund drive are named for Vernon county with a target of 1500 dollars for the week starting September. Plans assign community chairs and committees across districts to oversubscribe if possible, aiming to raise funds amid optimistic turnout.

Odell Sees First Bale Ginned in Town on Thursday

The first bale of the season, 40 pounds, was brought to Odell by Joe Mayo from Oklahoma and sold for 8.25 per hundred. Odell merchants paid a 15 premium. Ginned by S. B. Starr, it marks the Chickasha Cotton Oil Company gin purchase and future operation plans for Odell. Leo Cummins is the local manager for the Chickasha Cotton Oil Company at Odell.

Vernon Best Advertised in Texas Oil Outlook

J YL Tyler of Austin visited Vernon yesterday, traveling from Fort Stockton where he has spent weeks. He praises Wilbarger county oil prospects and says Vernon is the most advertised town in Texas. Delphians With Mrs Williams Plan September Meeting

The Delphian Chip will meet at Mrs. B A Williams home on Wednesday September 17. The lesson comes from Delphian Course No 7 covering the first two sets of questions on Roman literature. Members will answer roll call with a favorite recipe or household suggestion. Officers urge full attendance to discuss next year’s work.

Graf Farms Third Bale Harvest Near Vernon

E E Graf living eight miles northeast of Vernon delivered the third bale of the 1919 season on Monday. The bale weighed 600 pounds of staple and has not yet been marketed. Graf notes several bales are open on his farm. The first and second bales were brought in by H B Cox and Ernest Schur on Wednesday.

35 Horses Enter for County Fair in Vernon

Wilbarger County’s county fair near Vernon attracts 35 entered horses with potential for more. Racing program spans October 1 to 4 featuring pace and trot events, dashes, derbies, relays and special prizes totaling about 207 dollars, with a 4 percent entrance fee added to purses.

Denver Man Lives Vernon Visit by Oil Exchange Manager

Vernon news notes J D Parnell hosts W D Outman of Denver Colorado, manager of the Peoples Stock Exchange. Outman predicts a great oil field for Wilbarger County and calls Vernon one of the most substantial towns he has seen.

County Clubs Rally At Doans Camp Site

County clubs held a two day rally at Doans Camp Site with approx one hundred eighty members present. Speakers covered tubawork exhibits and county demonstrations while Miss Wilcos emphasized girls clubs plans. Prizes were awarded for seed corn heads with first to Ray Hix, second to Vernon Houte and third to Ernest Shemini. Recreation included games and songs amid coyotes howling at night.

Funeral for Miss Birdie Ballew at East View Chapel

Miss Birdie Ballew daughter of Mr and Mrs By Ta Ballew died after a long illness from typhoid fever at twenty years old. Funeral services were held at East View Congregational Church at 1 o clock yesterday with Rev Gaines Hall officiating. A host of friends joins in sorrow for the family.

Examination results for teachers and country certificates

The examination for teacher certificates was held in the high school on Friday and Saturday. Those taking the tests included Melarse FH Nixon J Winsett and Misses Mattie Carney Angel Gelhansen and Ruby Spears for white certificates. Applicants for country certificates were Misses Thelma Kilough Marie Marr and Lorelie Marr.

Odell Schools Open October 11gh Weathered Start

Odell schools begin an eight month term on Monday October 6 with public exercises. Principal Mr Gimmes enters his second year assisted by his wife who teaches seventh and eighth grades. Miss Roth Westbrook of Vernon will teach third fourth and fifth grades and Mrs J R Hate of Odell leads the primary grades.

Rural Schools Open Fall Session in Wilbarger County

Vernon West Vernon and Ronda rural districts filed the 1920 fall term opening with about sixty pupils at West Vernon. J Wood leads West Vernon with Theresa Playard Eve Lon Stephene as assistants. ER M Holt at Harvard district adds a second teacher Irhy Cocke Haley Martin Daisy Moody Bethe Ravenson. Rowda school taught by Miss Danny Morrow. None have free text books yet awaiting shipment from Austin. state books are scarce as crops dictate start times.

Memphis Man Appointed District Attorney in Memphis

A Memphis man, recently discharged from the army as a lieutenant, has been appointed district attorney for the sixth judicial district, succeeding Warlick who resigned to focus on business. Other applicants were A Williams of Childress and J A Storey of Memphis. Warlick extended duties until the appointment.

Criminal docket tak en up in district court

The District Court took up the criminal docket this week. The jury was called yesterday morning. Joe Price, charged with forgery, pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence of three years. Three men charged with stealing J Farrell's automobile pled guilty and got a suspended sentence of five years. Willian Mitchell, charged with murder and transported from Taylor county, was continued by agreement. The grand jury was ordered to reconvene Monday to investigate the case of Wiktie Lewis, colored, charged with forgery.

Joint Institute Close Yields Praise From Officials

Vernon and Wilbarger County held a joint institute that closed Friday after five days. County Superintendent Jon Polcher and City Superintendent J. Sisk praised the teachers for spirit and interest, noting the program was instructive and well prepared.

Believed good well near Harrold to be brought in weekly

Reports from Yelot Farm south of Harrold describe a dry hole struck at 2800 feet with 500 feet of oil in the hole. Plans call for bail and bring in within two days. Wilbarger County oil activity grows as several nearby prospects await confirmation of the Zelset and Pope wells and more results from the Parsroid area.

WHEAT YIELD RECORD REPORTED NEAR VERNON

Wale Davis north of Vernon produced an average 27.5 bushels of hard wheat per acre on 72.5 acres after threshing. Oats yield 46.5 bushels per acre. Davis credits a ahead-of-drill conditioner for the land. Thresher notes unusual quality and a large wheat yield count of 941 bushels.
