One Dead and Another Wounded in Johnson Farm Shootout

John Cowan of Chiara is dead and Hub Lay of Wichita Balls is severely wounded after a gunfight at Albert Johnson Farm north of town. Sheriff Murphy and Constable Turkett arrested five men. Johnson, allegedly upset by lost chickens, stated he fired 15 shots, with authorities finding pistol bullets in outhouse walls. Johnson was not arrested.

Pioneer W P Bates Dies at Mack After Long County Ties

W P Bates 86 pioneer and respected Mack resident died at home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 pm from his home with interment in Mack cemetery. He moved to Wilbarger county in 1888 and joined the Methodist church noting steadfast contributions to church work. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, with many friends attending from Vernon and other areas.

Rayland Man Dies After Long Illness Following Accident

He died at the home of his wife's father, K L. Jordan. Besides his widow and six months old baby, the dead man is survived by his mother and father, three brothers and one sister. He had many friends and during his long illness some of them were at his bedside constantly.

Famous Degree Team to Perform in Vernon Monday Night

The Andy Giip degree team of the Lo. O. B. will appear in Vernon at Odd Fellows Hall Monday night. The unit, not attached to any lodge, comprises off field workers and operates from Burkburnett. Members maintain lodge memberships and travel the Southwest, performing in navy towns and cities. The Journal lodge recently secured the team for the event, planned as a major local event.
