Storey Announces Re-Election To Texas Legislature

Cecil Storey, longtime floater for the 1st District of Texas, declares his candidacy for re-election to the Legislature. He opposes a Constitutional Convention and an income tax, urges economy, favors amending the constitution to tax property fairly, and pledges to vote “No” on most bills unless convinced otherwise. He highlights the need to fund insane asylums and Confederate Homes while cutting expenditures elsewhere.

Boy Scouts Open Season With First Practice Hike

The Vernon area Boy Scouts completed their first practice hike at St James springs about five miles west of Vernon under G L Taylor with clear instructions for teamwork. The troop plans a July trip to Medicine Park Oklahoma for a weeklong stay and annual hikes, with Bol Reed coordinating activities and the Vernon Concert Band directing guidance and performances at the resort.

Public Memorial Service Tonight at N. G. Armory

A Vernon public Memorial Day observance will be held tonight at the North Main Street Armory in tribute to Civil War, Spanish American War and World War II veterans. The National Guard leads the service with American Legion and civic groups participating. The event includes talks, music, a cemetery wreath, a firing salute, and a public viewing of the Armory.

Dallas candidate for governor to speak here June 5

Judge Felix P D Robertson of Dallas will address Vernon Thursday night June 5 in support of his Democratic nomination for Governor. The Criminal District Court No 1 jurist is touring by auto after stops in West Texas and the Panhandle and will head to the Rio Grande Valley for several dates before final primaries with talks in major statewide centers.

Washington heiress seeks Reno divorce suit

Test drilling contract near Fargo north of Verse River

A contract was let to Henry B. Labin and John B. Kindig of Wichita Falls to drill a 2150 foot test with standard tools about two miles south of Pargo near the Fargo cemetery. About 2000 acres are blocked for the well with drilling to begin within 60 days, part of an active oil exploration push in the region.

Fire of Unknown Origin Destroys Bridges Home

Fire at the T. J. Bridges residence on North Deaf Smith Street last night around 8 30 burned quickly from unknown origin. Mrs. Bridges saved a few items and fled to her mother's home in East Vernon while Mr. Bridges was away with the American Legion 2 iPass squad at the National Guard ferry when the blaze was found.

Grasshoppers Destroy Crops Hit Foard County Farmers

Reports from Vernon indicate heavy grasshopper damage in Foard county. Pests have devastated cotton crops so severely that in some fields replanting is required.

New Gin To Be Built In Vernon By Farmers Soon

About fifty farmers met last night in the Carnegie Library auditorium and formed a Farmers Cooperative Society. A board of directors was chosen and will pick a president this afternoon at 2. The group plans a gin one block south of Kell Mill on Fannin Street, costing about 20000, to be ready for the cotton season this fall. The society already has 70 members and 7000 acres of cotton pledged, with expectations to reach 100 members before fall.

A civil suit filed by Hawley challenges the validity of the county road bond issue in District No 4 including East Ver non and Okleunion. Youngs Visit White City Couple in Oklahoma Trip

Mr and Mrs James A Young of Lubbock visited Mr and Mrs IL Robertson of the White City community Sunday Monday and Tuesday. They drove from Lubbock 221 miles in a Maxwell coupe arriving at 2 pm. The Youngs planned to return via Oklahoma City to visit relatives and then White City again.

Ten Horses Enter Harness Races in Wichita Falls Meet

Ten horses already entered come from Louisiana Colorado and Central Texan for a two day harness meet set for June 13 and 4 with more entries expected. The new Presbyterian church opens with a three service day led by Rev. Bh. b. Moore and Rev. Robert Cocke with organist Miss Thelma Sherrill and Rush Cocke.
