Pierce Remodeling Building on Main Street

J. Pierce has let a $5,000 remodeling contract for his corner North Main and Texas streets building to be used by the J. C. Venney Company around August 1. Allen and Davis are the local contractors handling the overhaul and new shelving.

Three Aspirants Vie For Senate In 23rd District

The 23rd Senate district spanning Wilbarger Wichita Clay Baylor and other counties closed filings as candidates lined up for state and county offices. Parnell of Wichita Falls Marshall and Martin joined late, with Parnell a former Wilbarger representative. Others include Guinn Williams for Congress and Cecil Storey for Legislature. County committees will certify ballots and set filing costs in coming days.

District meeting set for June 2 in Memphis region

Fergeson Drug Store Burglarized Over Weekend

Thieves gained entry through a rear window of the Vintiddings building Sunday night and burglarized the Fergeson Drug Store, taking about 75 dollars of narcotics. Entry occurred after closing time and before Monday dawn. no clues to the robbers’ identities have been found.

Mrs. P. A. Pegues Dies at Her Longview Home

Mrs. P A Pegues of Longview died at her home Sunday after several months illness. Burial was in Longview cemetery the next day. Survived by four daughters and two sons including J G Pegues and C W Standifer, with Ada Oklahoma daughter N Thompson and Wichita Falls daughter C E Basham, and P T Pegues of Dallas. Ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren also listed.

Bourland and Sharp Ship Speck to Fort Worth

Bourland and Marvin Sharp shipped 70 head of hogs and 24 head of cattle to the Fort Worth market Monday morning. This first shipment of the year from their stock farm four miles east of Vernon highlights their long-standing leadership in pureblood stock, with prior prizes at Wilbarger County and other fairs.

Davis No 1 Spudded In Sunday Night At Eight

The Daniels Murchison and Dieg No 1 on the Davis farm one mile south of Vernon was spudded in Sunday night at eight o clock with a twenty nine bit. The well will be drilled to a depth of 2500 feet with a large bit to cut off surface water at fifteen inch casing. The company expects to reach 2500 feet before encountering sand. This is the first well drilled in this area to test in the city and will be watered with one well inter act.

Saturday Night Raids Arrest Five Beer Sellers in Vernon

Saturday night was busy for the sheriff's force as five Negro men were arrested in Vernon for selling moc beer and eight more were arrested in the eastern county for disturbance. One intoxicated man was seized on carnival grounds during raids on houses believed to be beer selling headquarters.

Veteran of Two Total Attendance Wars Is Buried in Henrietta

Mineral services were held Sunday afternoon in Henrietta for George McTaylor Sr who died Saturday May 81 following a mass at two Peups. He served in Civil War 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later the regular army, taking part in Little Bighorn. He retired to run hotels and restaurants with his wife in Vernon and Henrietta. Interment in Henrietta cemetery under Masons. several relatives attended. Attendance at Sunday schools averaged 1155 with total May attendance 4816 and $220.71 collected.

County Wins In Road Bond Case On First Trial

The road bond suit against East Vernon Oklahoma district, filed for alleged unfair districting and irregularities in the Oklainton election, was dismissed by Judge Po A Martin. The injunction was dissolved and costs assessed against the plaintiffs with twenty days to appeal to the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals.

Gas Franchise Talks Progress in Vernon

City Commission and M. Church, owner of a shared Vernon well, held meetings on granting a franchise to supply natural gas. While no final agreement, key changes were tentatively accepted, with drafts to be reviewed by attorneys and the city from next steps. If approved, Church will drill and lay a gas line aiming for delivery before spring.
