Vernon hosts federation launch with multiple women’s groups

A Vernon meeting established the Wilbarger County Federation of Women’s Organizations. Mrs. W. H. Huggins was named president and delegates were chosen to attend district clubs. The group aims to unite county groups, promote pure milk, cleaner food, and highway beautification with planned tree plantings along roads.

Local High School Plans May 16 Comedy Play Catching Clara

Seniors will present Catching Clara, a comedy of about twenty roles, at commencement exercises on Friday May 16. Roberta Scott coaches the cast as practice fills spare moments. The program details and full cast are not yet announced by Superintendent Sisk. The commencement sermon is May 11 at the First Methodist Church by Rev. Henry F. Brooks. School closes the following Friday.

Mrs Keltz Heads to Federated Clubs Meeting in Stamford

Mrs FE L Keltz, president of the local Home Science Club, left yesterday to attend a Federated Clubs meeting for the First District of Texas in Stamford. Mrs A H Murchison traveled as a delegate for Wilbarger County clubs and societies.

Rumor of Texas Company Well at Streit Farm Near Vernon

Rumor says Texas Company drilled a test well on the Fred Streit farm about twelve miles southwest of Vernon. Drilling stopped Wednesday afternoon and crew left for Wichita Falls. about 2,800 feet deep with visitors confined. If pay sand is found, it could expand production about ten miles west.

Vernon Teachers Elected and Board Needs More Pedagogues

The Vernon school board reelected M Wiggins Ruth Bickle and Blanche Groves to science commercial subjects and mathematics. They must choose a principal and English history teachers after Miss Roberta Scott and Miss Flora Goodwin left. Several grade teachers were also reelected with Lela Gilbert filling Mrs Howard Timberlake’s former position. Will Brambatow to lead Shive school with Shive staff and East Vernon ward teachers listed. Lora Belle Barnes reelected at the colored school.

Death of Rockwall Banker J T Bailey Prompt Family Trains

W Bailey received a telegram yesterday morning announcing the death of his nephew J T Bailey in Rockwall. Mr and Mrs Bailey left on the noon train to attend the funeral with four year old Miss Joe Bailey accompanying them. The deceased was a prominent young banker of Rockwall and leaves a widow and four small children.

Nothing Official About New Trains in Vernon This Summer

Vernon may gain two additional trains over the Denver route by mid June with through passenger service from Fort Worth to Denver. Local Agent G T Wheeler hears plans target tourist traffic to Colorado and could replace existing Fort Worth to Childress trains. Official word expected soon from the Worth & Denver Railway.

Neal division reaches drilling stage for Vernon County well

West Vernon property owners pool leases and prepare to drill a Vernon area well. Neal division head Greene and officers Gerht and Cox announce funds raised by stock subscriptions to May, with 1,500 acres leased on Neal and Hamilton farms. A drilling rig and timbers ordered, with movement expected within the next thirty days.

Wilbarger County Eyes Sweet Potato Curing Plant

Interest in securing a sweet potato curing plant in Vernon grows as county farmers expect higher incomes and expanded acreage. A Chamber of Commerce committee and TH. Ti. McConnell of the Southland Sweet Potato Curing and Storage Association discussed the plan, with no firm deal yet but renewed efforts anticipated.

Fargo Woman to Dallas Sanitarium

Mrs. Buren Goodpasture of Fargo is in serious condition at St. Pauls sanitarium in Dallas. Ill for two weeks she was brought for an operation Tuesday night but arrived too weak for it. She was accompanied by her husband and Dr T Jordan of Fargo who returned home yesterday.

Damage to Vernon road project by rain in week

Heavy rain this week damaged concrete work on the Vernon to Ward Oklainton road project by O A Swinburn. Excavations for piers and abutments caved in requiring pumping to remove water and delays of a day or two.

J M Rogers of the Ver non area reports corn and maize up and looking well this week. He does not expect rain needed for a month and notes worked ground is in fine condition.

Lightning Strikes Three Homes on West Maiden Street

A severe electrical storm last night struck the residences of HLL Coleman and W W Gilbert on West Maiden Street and caused fire damage. A patch of wallpaper scorched at Coleman’s, wallpaper and carpentry burned in a room, and a sewing machine damaged. A brick fire was shattered and the shingle roof damaged at C T Smith’s home on West Texas Street.

Flurol Shempwell of Washington D C an experienced oil operator visited Vernon to assess drilling opportunities in looked over territory around Vernon with the aim of starting operations in the county He was joined by A L Benson of Galveston Texas legislator for Island City who also eyed Vernon for potential business ventures Shempwell praised Vernon calling it the most attractive town he had seen in Texas and hoped to locate a venture there
