Wilbarger county reports near assured wheat yields thanks to 1 1 4 inches of rain over the weekend bringing total near 9 3 4 inches since January. Farmers note moisture benefits, potential hail risk, and favorable outlook for alfalfa oats corn and sorghum with widespread hay and feed production ahead.
Editors at Vernon hosted Panhandle Press Association events with praise for Weldon Teagarden who wowed attendees as a promising Arthur Pryor of the nation. Catherine Pierce earned high notes for violin as the gathering showcased engaging programs and a sightseeing wheat-and-oil region tour.
Farmers report years of gopher damage to county alfalfa with enormous losses. Individual trapping fails as rodents migrate from adjacent fields. Mrs. C J Farrell reports a $200 yearly scholarship from President F M Brasley to provide one award per state district. The scholarship supports entrants to home making or the regular freshman class. Applicants should contact Mrs. Farrell as president of the First District for appointments.
The Daniel Oil Company will drill a well on six acres in Block 35 of the Red River Valley Subdivision after increasing capital stock from 60 000 to 320 000 by issuing new stock to Bell and Shelton. A drilling committee includes C D Shelton and W S Tandy. Shareholders are urged to return stock certificates for cancellation and reissue.
Henry Graf from northeast of Vernon reported in town on Wednesday that the grass is unusually abundant for this time of year and looks fine, with no rain expected to be needed for several days.
County Agent N. OR. Tindal reports the organization of an Agricultural Club at Oklainton and Red Bluff, bringing the total to fourteen Ged clubs in the county. He will push to organize every school in the area.
Mr and Mrs F C Mints of Thy- Ha announce the safe arrival of their son Rev Mints at Newport News. The notice is dated April 24 and appears in a local delivery.
Local notice calls on Vernon property owners to trim weeds in yards and along sidewalks and parking areas. Weet Waibarger street is highlighted with many weed patches on prominent properties, blanket statement that most streets show similar neglect. Authorities urge action to improve town appearance and health.
Willie Dalmasso has arrived in Vernon from overseas and will be discharged and sent home within a few days. Parents Mr and Mrs Wied hoe were notified of the Vernon youth’s arrival and impending homecoming.
Cook returns home Sunday from Julia where they attended Anna Case concert Friday night. Anna Case, not a soprano from the Metropolitan Company, performed in a mimes and scenes program at a local venue.
Wilbarger County has sold 96000 in Victory bonds with eleven days left to meet the quota. Mrs Frances A Sumner leads with 20000 purchased. several families and local residents bought 1000 to 2500 each. Delays in daily reporting by communities hinder full publication and district records.
Mints of Thalia reported hail across the county Monday with limited damage overall. The hail damaged some patches of wheat in the southwest portion while local farmers noted rust affecting a section of crops.
Mr and Mrs Uriel Reed arrive from New Orleans where Reed served in the Bureau of Intelligence Division of Coast Defense. The couple will immediately travel to Helena Montana to begin farming. Reed is the son of Harper and Mrs Reed. His wife is the daughter of BC and Mrs Bennett.
A meeting of the City Federation of Women is set for 2 30 tomorrow afternoon in the Carnegie Library. Every women’s club lodge and church organization is urged to send a representative, including groups from the county and Vernon.
A small fire at Dr J B Dodson Jr's residence at the corner of Pease and Deaf Smith streets was reported about 11 in the morning. Firemen had the blaze under control before extinguishers were needed.
A new joint stock oil venture the Neal Hamilton Oil Company with $40 000 capital and 5 trustees was formed after a stockholders meeting at the Library building. Trustees are WL O Andeseatig Hl Shive J A Cox N R Heath and Clois L Greene. Drilling may start within 40 days on Neal Hamilton lands near Burkburnett as Waggoner Naci onal Bank cashier Basham led the effort and presided.
Wilbur Purvis, longtime Vernon resident, died at his home in Pasadena California on Saturday April 19. His only survivor is his ill wife. The body will be shipped to Vernon for burial within thirty days after temporary interment in Pasadena. Mrs Purvis is the sister of Mrs L B Robertson of Vernon.
Armour & Company official FE Mahaney announces plans to set up Armour headquarters in Vernon and stock a distribution point in the city as business justifies expansion across this part of the state.
W. M. Melton reports that his son Le Roy Melton will go to Camp Milla and expects to land by ship from Brest around Apt 18.
