Vernon is rapidly growing and the current high school house is cramped with 365 pupils on the roll and about 240 jammed into a two story building. Desks fill corridors and a yard shack serves manual training. Officials urge a new 500 pupil facility to meet future enrollment.
A young white man was fined by Mayor Harry Mason yesterday for violating the traffic ordinance after crashing into a lamp post on Main Street. The mayor warned that fines may rise as lamp posts have been damaged three times recently and drivers often break traffic laws.
City Marshal Jim Key announced enforcement of chicken ordinances urging all property owners and tenants to clean premises as warm weather brings flies. He warned of thorough inspections and fines for stray chickens and garden damage, stressing gardens and flower beds will be protected under the ordinance.

Russell Douglas Adams the four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J H Adams of Odell was buried in East View Wednesday afternoon at four with Rev J J Mims officiating. He died after ten days of illness from scarlet fever leaving a brother Aubrey and a sister Nell. Relatives from Arlington and Ringgold attended the funeral.
Students of Alaulk Hill school present the comedy Bashful Mr. Bobbs in the Hinds school auditorium tonight at eight oclock. The play has proven a decided success as a fun maker in many places.
The final report from the U S department of agriculture shows Wilbarger County ginned 27 128 bales, far surpassing the previous year’s 2 41. This county produced the most cotton ginned in the immediate cotton belt of the state.
The Vernon fire department elected delegates for the state firemen's convention to be held in San Marcos May 1 and 2. Fire chief B A Williams heads the delegation with John H Huntley Irving Vaughn and M R Sewell as delegates. alternates are M Cato John Walker and Tolison McElroy. Fire Marshall Jim Key may attend as a city delegate, to be discussed with the city commission. The meeting noted donations of 10 from Vernon Cotton Oil Co and F D Shamburger.
City Marshal Jim Rev issued a general warning after several dogs and a child were bitten in the city. Officials reported dogs showing rabies signs were killed, with the head sent to Austin for testing. Authorities urged owners to keep dogs confined and vigilant, warning the public of the danger to the community.
Hick Bowers defeated Jack Denton at Childress Wednesday night, gaining a probable decision over his rival. The bout drew a strong crowd and featured stiff exchanges, placing both fighters in the big fight class. Bowers had trained with Pyenton at the American Legion two weeks prior.
