Fine Programs Features Of Community Week

Community week programs draw crowds at Allingham Park each night with the Mother Goose Pageant repeated after several child actors were missing. A Manless Wedding directed by Mrs. Leon H. Brown featured Leon H. Brown as minister, a self written mock ceremony, and a large cast list. The Twelve Oi Maids and a garden party tableau followed with music, readings, and dances by local performers.

Colley Dies Here Wednesday at 78

R B Colley 78 longtime county resident died suddenly at his West Texas Street home at 11 30 am Wednesday. Found by daughter Clara seated on front porch after luncheon. Survived by widow four sons Bert Harry Hibbard W E and daughter Clara all of Vernon. Funeral at Methodist church with Dr R K Dickenson officiating. Interment East View cemetery. Pallbearers listed. honorary names provided. Colley had suffered heart failures in recent months and was a devoted Methodist.

Cars Collide Near Central Christian Church

Mrs. Delbert Webb driving an Overland collided with a Dodge driven by Mr. and Mrs. Gandy at the Mesquite and Wilbarger streets corner Wednesday morning near the Central Christian church. The Overland mounted the church steps, suffered a right front wheel and fender damage. the Gandy car received minor impact. both Mrs. Webb and Mr. Gandy sustained slight injuries.

Senator Burkett Addresses Small Crowd Yesterday

Senator Burkett, gubernatorial candidate, spoke to a small audience in the district court room at 1280 yesterday afternoon urging better racial schools and roads, a reduction in running state expenses, and the abolition of ten state boards. He proposed a two year farmer credit, a state central bank, fees for higher education, gasoline tax based on travel, convicts on roads, and consolidation of prison farms. He opposed automatic tax shifts and criticized current school handling while praising reform. He later spoke in Crowell.

Former Vernon Man Weds In Hamlin Thursday

Roy Stine of Quanah, former Vernon man and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stine, married Miss Keith Adkins on Thursday at her Haulin home. They visited Vernon briefly then moved to Quanah to settle. Stine runs a tailoring business in Quanah.

Two-Day Harness Race Meet Opens This Afternoon

The Albert B K Robinson Post American Legion sponsors a two day harness meet opening at Baty Park at 2 this afternoon. About 30 horses are entered marking one of the fastest fields in the region with the McGregor Shows providing amusement at the fair grounds. Local trainers report horses in good shape despite heat and recent travel from colder climates. Six entries from Pueblo Colo add speed to the roster as track conditions draw favorable responses from spectators and officials. Funds raised will support post veterans and local relief efforts.

Minnie Commmins Dies Tuesday Near Vernon

Miss Minnie Cronmins, 44, died at her home south of Vernon Tuesday afternoon and was buried Wednesday afternoon. Mineral services were held by Rev. L. P. Bopp at the Central Christian church. Interment was in East View Cemetery. Cronmins came from Hopkins County to this part of the state last April with her parents.

Lamar County Girl Wins Prize for a Novel

Lustin Texas June 12 Ruth Cross of Lamar County a graduate of the University of Texas rewarded the prize of 3500 offered by Dr. Frank of Dallas for the best novel submitted by a university graduate. Miss Cross was awarded for her book The Golden Cocoon recently published by Harpers.

Farm Boys Leave for Childress Rotary Meet

The Farm Club Boys Stork Judging team leaves Vernon for Childress to compete in the district stock judging test tomorrow afternoon with coach County Agent S. W. Chaney. Candidate for Court of Appeals Visits Vernon

Judge Reese Tatu of Dalhart visited Vernon this week in the interest of the candidacy for executive Justice of the Court of Civil Appeals of Amarillo. Tatum is at present judge of the Sixty-ninth Judicial District of Texas, which includes seven counties along the western panhandle border.

Kell Milling Pays Premium for First Wheat Load

The Kell Milling Company will pay a premium of 1.26 dollars per bushel for the first load of new crop wheat from Witbarger County. J A Birdsong, the general manager, says the offer is open to any size load from farmers in the county and boosts income as wheat prices are low. The current crop is better than recent years, with higher yield per acre and overall county production expected to rise despite less wheat acreage.

Drowning of Clark H Ish at Lake Kemp near Vernon

Clark H Ish 27 son of former Sheriff W A Ish drowned Wednesday at Lake Kemp near Vernon while fishing with companions. He cramps and sank in Coffee Creek about 2 miles south of Vernon. body recovered later that day by Dek Towers with others. Ish, a Vernon bookkeeper, served overseas in wartime and belonged to Presbyterian church Elks and American Legion. He is survived by his parents two brothers Grady and W A Ish Jr and sister Mrs Tom Subomerour.

Hawkins Returns from Imperial Council Meeting

L G Hawkins returned from Kansas City where he attended the Imperial Council of Shriners. He said the Maskat Chanters of Whehttas Falls impressed the audience and the Muskat organization played a prominent role in the activities. The Chanters could not perform at Air Hingham Park this week because two members were placed under the care of a physician.

Two Teens Cancel Summer Trip Plans After Austin Trip
