Drowning Claims Second Victim In Forty Eight Hours
In Vernon area news reports two drownings with the first involving T W Lidster, 48, who died saving his two sons on Pease River near Vernon. His 17 year old son rescued his younger brother as the father sank in 15 feet of water. The elder boy led rescuers to the body after aid arrived six hours later. Lidster, a tenant farmer, left a widow and eight children and had just secured an $8000 life policy. The second drowning victim was Clark H Ish, a prominent local youth, in Lake Kemp waters on the prior Wednesday.

Alger Brothers Enter Try-Outs For Rifle Team
First Sereant Thomas L Alger and Sergeant Charles Alger departed for Camp Mabry Austin to enter national rifle meet tryouts at Camp Perry Ohio in September. Both carry strong rifle records with Thomas as expert marksman and Charles expected to secure a state team berth. Preliminary practice started at Mabry with record firing slated to begin soon to assist unfamiliar shooters. If Vernon men join the state team they will proceed to Camp Perry in September remain through October.

Boy Scouts Set for Medicine Park Camping Trip
One hundred Boy Scouts will depart Monday morning for Medicine Park Oklahoma for about ten days of camping at the pleasure resort. The Scout band will perform several concerts. Scout master G L Taylor says the group is prepared after completing first aid and cooking courses. Parents taking cars should report to him for final plans. National Guard tents and kitchen gear are provided. This is the largest Boy Scout train here, and the first camp of this kind. Taylor started last July with 16 members and has grown to over 125 in just months.

Farm Boys Stock Judging Team Is Sixth in Contest
Wilbarger County Farm Boys Stock Judging team placed sixth in the district stock judging contest at Childress on Saturday afternoon. Teams had varying preparation lengths, with Foard County winning. Mother and Child Plunge After Car Off Embankment
Mrs Denny and her son Jack narrowly escaped death when a Chevrolet touring car plunged off an embankment near Vernon Sunday around 1 am. The steering wheel came off, the vehicle slid into a slough, the mother was thrown into mud with minor bruises while the son was unhurt in the overturned car. Passersby freed the boy, both occupants were heavily mudded.

The first load of wheat was delivered Saturday to Kell Mill by Ernest Thompson from his farm southeast of Vernon. A premium price of 1.258 bushels was paid, with 34 1/2 bushels in the load. The value totaled RW20 and Thompson’s farm yields average 20 bushels per acre. Harvest runs countywide with a single thresher operating, and the wheat crop shows strong early returns despite fewer acres.

Vernon Man J D Robinson Buried After Grapevine Injury
J D Robinson 61 died after an operation at his Lexington street home following an injury from a dynamite blast at his business corner Texas and Malin streets on March 8. He was buried near his old Grapevine home after a funeral attended by family including six children Roy, Hobin, Lute White, Florence Martha and Mary. He had lived in Vernon over two years after moving from Fort Worth and was a member of the Federated Presbyterian church.
