100 Percent Tax Increase Approved by Wildcat School

In a special election Saturday at Wildcat school north of Vernon voters in the precinct cast a unanimous 100 percent vote for increasing the school tax from 50 to 70 cents. State aid previously denied due to insufficient local taxes.

Monster Parade Opens Vernon Community Week Big event

The monster parade, the largest ever in Vernon, opened Community Week with nearly every local firm, club, and church represented. A long route through downtown featured decorated cars, a Pageant of Progress, and a concert at Allingh am Park. The procession included a covered wagon, side saddles, and mounted escorts, ending after a mile and a half as winners prepared for tonight’s events including a Mother Goose Pageant and a variety of performances by local groups.

Gas Franchise To Be Finally Passed by City Tomorrow

The city will finalize the gas franchise granted to G. M. Church after two readings and the third held tomorrow. The measure will be published weekly for three weeks in a local newspaper before taking effect. Church plans a second gas well near Church No. 1, after a 14 million cubic feet gas find, and would start laying mains in Vernon if no additional wells are brought in.

Vernon barber held after fatal shooting Sunday

Vernon barber is jailed on murder charges after a fatal shooting in Dallas Sunday. Kate Carpenter, 28, former Vernon resident, was mortally wounded at her Bryan Street home and died Monday afternoon in a Dallas hospital with four bullet wounds. Carpenter claims self defense after an argument with the woman’s brother escalated. the victim stepped between them and was struck. Carpenter had worked at a Vernon barber shop about a month, moving from Wichita Falls. Kate Carpenter, a former Vernon girl, was a minister’s wife and mother of two sons, Russell and Delma. the couple had a pending divorce.

Rapid paving work west of Vernon on Colorado Gulf Highway

Work on the pavement west of Vernon progresses with about 1.1 miles left to lay toward a total of 3.6 miles and 2.5 miles of movement. Started in early April, the project has slowed due to weather and material delays. The new pavement runs from east of Tolbert to 100 yards west of the Pease River bridge. The state highway commission allows stopping paving west of the bridge in case the river shifts and endangers crossing alignment.

Sergeant Kale Heads to Stamford for 142nd Infantry Training

Sergeant D Kale, attached to the local National Guard unit, departed Sunday for Stamford to begin an instruction tour with the third battalion of the 142nd Infantry Texas National Guard. He will return to Vernon on June 22 after three days with Captain Floyd Moore, superintendent of the 142nd Infantry.
