The Wilbarger Federation of Women’s clubs met to discuss Community Week. Tickets are selling, programs printed, and stage work underway with volunteers. Events run Monday Sept 3 through Saturday Sept 8 featuring music, drama, and speeches by local clubs, with leaders like Judge James Leak and Mayor Harry Mason attending.
Funeral services were held for Joe Norris 84 at Underwood parlors in Vernon. Norris, a pioneer, died last week in Trinidad Colorado and is survived by sons Bruce and Hardy Washington. He served as Vernon’s first constable in 1881 and 1882 before moving to a farm south of Vernon and later to Oklahoma. Interment was in East View Cemetery beside his wife. Interstate Commerce Commission granted leave for Quanah, Acme and Pacific to intervene in Texas Panhandle and Gulf Railway line construction from Tucumcari to Seymour and Perry to Fort Worth, with protests from Fort Worth and Western Railways. Dallas may join hearings. Fort Worth business interests back the route for a direct West Texas link via New Mexico.
B. C. Wood, 73, prominent farmer living near Tolbert, died at his home Saturday afternoon after several months of illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Tolbert Baptist church by Rev. Frank McNair with interment in Tolbert cemetery. Survived by widow, three sons Ollie B. of Wichita Falls, Frank of California, Hansel of Colorado, and daughter Anna Mae.
J. L. Archer, president of the Wil County Singing Convention, announces an all day singing convention at Jackson Springs on the second Sunday in September with a formal opening Saturday night September 8. Dinner will be served picnic fashion and all hymn lovers invited to attend.

The women of The Presbyterian church served a noon meal Friday to workmen building the new Presbyterian church on West Wilbarger Street. R B G hallmark of Dallas, architect for the structure, attended the dinner.
Sheriff Frank Edmondson and deputies raided a negro house near the Methodist church last night and recovered 1 gallons of Choc beer. A negro woman was arrested and jailed in connection with the raid and allegedly sold the beverage to both white people and negroes.
The booster trip planned for Elliott tonight has been postponed due to a revival meeting still in progress. The trip was due two weeks ago but has been postponed twice. Chamber of Commerce officials announced plans to hold the event until the meeting ends.
Mrs Lula Cooper of West Point Georgia visiting daughter Mrs Hogsett was seriously ill last week but is reported better today though still very ill.
A meeting of the Woman's Club is scheduled with president Mrs. J E Collins on Paradise street at 4 o clock tomorrow afternoon to discuss important business pending.
The Wilbarger County Fair track at the fair grounds is in first class shape for the big race meet set for September 1, 20, 21, and 22. Track soil allows full speed with minimal injury risk. Stables are being repaired and will be overhauled by mid next week. The exhibition hall extends 40 feet, with a concrete floor added. The fair is expected to be the largest in Wilbarger County history, featuring Wortham shows, free amusement, better exhibits, and top race attractions in Texas. Manager R.H.H. Coffee has advertised territory wide, drawing interest especially from neighboring Oklahoma residents who will attend.
Dr. Robert B. Dickenson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will return from Colorado in time to hold services at the usual hour Sunday. A postcard confirms he will reach home by Sunday. He noted no Vernon residents attended a recent Cheyenne Canyon picnic, and all Vernon people seem to be enjoying themselves.
Hundreds attended a revival at Lockett Baptist Church with 48 persons baptized in the T. B. Leverett tank after two weeks of services. Rev. Mr. Pippin preached and led to 65 total conversions while S.A Thireatt of Fort Worth Seminary led singing as Vernon Baptists joined in.
Sam M. Braswell of Clarendon president of the Texas Press Association names committees to run association business until the 1924 Amarillo convention. R. H. Nichols of Vernon chairs the program committee with B. M. Mader of Electra on it. Warwick of Canyon chairs printing. J. Loomis of Canadian sits on the memorial committee. Homer Steen of Floydada and J. Thomas of Childress are among National Editorial Association delegates.
Four men were arrested while attempting to sell two Ford cars linked to a large theft ring that spanned several states. A confession by one suspect lists numerous stolen vehicles and substantial oil field equipment valued around $100000. Investigators report cars were moved to another state re painted and renumbered for sale. Further developments expected within a week.
Kenneth Bryant aged 12 son of Mr and Mrs C A Bryant was injured at about seven o clock Saturday night when his bicycle was struck by an automobile driven by Louis King at Wilburger and Lexington streets. Initial reports said serious injury but home reports say he will recover fully in a few days.
County Superintendent L. A. Hollar announced that blanks for state aid applications for rural schools have been received and must be completed promptly by rural school trustees. The forms were issued by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and aid is granted only when the blanks are filled out.
Miss Georgia Castlebury travels to Wortham to serve as bride's maid to Miss Gettys Quimby. Quimby will wed James EB Tucker this Thursday evening at the First Presbyterian church. Quimby is a familiar figure here, having hosted Castlebury as a guest at a recent house party.
The Grand Jury of the 46th District Court reported five indictments on Saturday. Jon Collins was indicted for a serious offense against his daughter. W. T. Langston faced an indictment for a reported incident against his stepdaughter. W. W. Burch was charged with an incident with intent against his daughter. Bond for Collins and Langston was set at 10,000 each, Burch at 5,000, and Sneed was indicted for a related offense with bond set at 10,000, later reduced to 5,000. Johnnie Walker faced a separate charge with an initial 10,000 bond, later adjusted.
An eclipse of the sun occurs on September 10 in Veonen territory. Observers with keen eyes may spot Venus using smoked glass. The sun appears as a crescent while the earth darkens, requiring artificial lighting for work. A total eclipse is visible in Central Old Mexico.
Deputy sheriffs bring numerous witnesses before the grand jury from multiple counties and Oklahoma. A returning deputy brings an Oklahoma man as an attached witness and a seven year old girl from another county is also brought as an attached witness.
Officers from the Sheriff's department took John Tronx into custody at night upon request by Electra authorities. He is wanted on a felony charge. Bond was set at 1500 dollars.
J C Glover and family returned from Tennessee and found crops in Wilbarger County superior to many parts of Arkansas. He noted Arkansas showed some areas with poorer yields while Wilbarger County stood out for its good crop conditions.
Vernon Electric and Ice Company proposes buying the municipally owned Frederick Oklahoma power plant. Lawton Light and Power may also bid. The plan includes supplying power along the Lee Highway and electrifying farms and towns along the route with power from Vernon. The Frederick plant would stay in use, with power supplied from Vernon if the deal closes.
George Truitt Adams of Waco was appointed assistant pastor of First Baptist Church of Vernon. Announcement came at the morning service. Adams, a Baylor student, conducted the song service at a revival recently and was highly recommended. He was married last week and will arrive with his bride September 1.
A party from Arkadelphia stops at Vernon's tourist park on a Saturday night en route to Floydada. M Crawford praises the park for beauty and management, especially the attendant, guest registration, car number and address checks, and on-site telegrams and messages.
Report lists recipients from the Teacher's College at Canyon with Vernon ties. Miss Alice Small and Miss Kinard are named, Miss Simcon earned a permanent certificate, and Mr Kinard received a second year Normal First Grade certificate.
Mr and Mrs R L May of Fargo were shopping in Vernon on Saturday, enjoying a day out and browsing local stores. The couple appeared in good spirits as they explored downtown venues and chatted with shopkeepers.
Mrs J A Randall was a guest of her daughters Mrs J W Gookin and Miss Allie Randall Sunday to Bhectra.
