Highway officials push bond plan for Wilbarger paving

Texas Highway Commission membersKR M. Michael of New Boston and DPD K Martin of Itasca toured the Teo Highway from Plainview to Vernon and proposed a bond levy to cover about one third of a $40,000 per mile paving program. If approved, Wilbarger County would gain roughly forty miles of new pavement at an estimated total cost of 4000000, financed by a tax levy not exceeding 5 cents per $100.

Vernon Schools Gain Credits Record in Texas Rank

Vernon Public Schools now hold 29.5 units of affiliation in Texas, highest among similar towns and rivaling cities four to five times larger. Two additional credits were granted yesterday to be earned as one half unit each in domestic art trig economics and manual training. Farmers Can Pork for Year’s Supply at Ronda Friday

A pork canning day at W W Welch home near Ronda Friday last week drew about 24 participants. Alf Bond and Mr Welchart assisted while Muss Emuln Goodfellow, the home demonstration agent, supervised the canning. Over 250 cans of pork were prepared into sausage, pork steaks, fried pork, and other products, with 4 pounds of lard rendered.

Man suffers oil rig accident injuring hand in Oklahoma

Edgar Walker of Town Park is hospitalized after an oil rig accident near Oklainion yesterday morning. A heavy object crushed his right hand, three fingers were removed, and he is resting well at a local hospital.

Ford Day in Vernon Draws Thousands for Parades and Dollar Sales

Vernon held a Ford Day parade and Dollar Day with an estimated crowd surpassing 500 from nearby areas. The event featured numerous Ford cars, varied attendees, and prize gives, followed by store sales and park fund contributions from proceeds. The day passed peacefully with refreshments and community booths downtown.

Railroad Man Hurt When Car Derails on Frisco Tracks

John B. Grey of West Plains Missouri was injured Friday afternoon while working with a Frisco crew when a tank car fell from the rails crushing a hand and severing a finger. He received treatment at the local company surgeon and was sent to the Frisco hospital. he is 42 years old.

Easterling resigns as Deputy County Clerk of Wilbarger County and moves to Childress to begin duties as official stenographer for the new 100th District Court. He assumed his post yesterday. Greene appointed Deputy County Clerk to replace Rasterling and took office yesterday.

The Woman's Missionary Union of the Wilbarger Foard Baptist association will convene at Vernon Baptist Church on August 15 16 and 17. Mellagh resigns as County Judge after long service and is named county auditor. Judge McHugh to assume duties in about 20 days. During McHugh's tenure pav ed roads were added and praised by engineers. County road program continues with no date set for his successor.

Baker Named Editor Manager at Electra Newspaper

The Electra News reports V A Baker will succeed Buford Brown as editor manager of the Electra paper. Brown resigns to join Leland Stanford University as a journalism professor and depart later this month. Baker has long been with the Electra Star and previously worked in Wichita Falls papers. He is a World War veteran with prior banking experience in California.

Local golfers contest Saturday at Hill Crest course

Tommy Cochran runner up in the state golf tournament and Judge Win lay Weldon of Wichita Falls played an informal match at Hill Crest club against KR B Gibson and Ty Rogers, local low score men. Cochran has been near the state championship and Weldon is seen as one of the best from Wichita Falls. The visitors won as the locals improved but fell short in form.

John Storey Plays Lucky on Friday in Wichita Falls Crash

District Attorney John Storey narrowly escaped serious injury when a ceiling collapsed at Tipton's Drug Store in Wichita Falls. A friend and three others were seriously hurt as heavy metal lath and debris rained down just as Storey left the soda fountain, an event locals call remarkably fortunate for him.

Elderly Man J K Langley Dies in Vernon Hospital

J K Langley aged 79 of Thalia died in a Vernon hospital after a lingering illness. He was brought in when his condition grew grave and all efforts to save him failed. The body will be taken to Thalia for funeral services. Mr and Mrs Joe Foerster of Lockett were business visitors Monday.

Legion members transform Vernon park into a brighter area

Vernon American Legion post members spent three afternoons clearing brush and whitewashing trees at the Vernon Tourist Camp park. They cut undergrowth along the road front, burned debris, and enhanced lighting and facilities to create a more convenient park visible from the highway.

Lem Richards Held on Liquor Charge in Foard County

Lem Richards was arrested in Foard County late last week by deputies acting on a warrant from the county charging him with manufacturing liquor. He was released on bond pending trial after officers from four counties including Wilbarger located an operating still, mash, and a gun belonging to Richards.
