Vernon Harrold Winners In Interscholastic Meet

Vernon high school won the Interscholastic Track and Field meet for class A in the third district with 50 points. Ransom Walker of Vernon was high point man with 28 points in multiple events. Clifton Withers added 21 1/2 points. Harrold won class B with 41 points led by Bil Clynch. The meet featured Chillicothe and other district schools with multiple event results listed.

Vernon Harness Races Promised as Best Yet

Vernon gears up for two day harness meet on June 14 and 15 with 50 to 60 horses expected from across the Southwest. New Test on Davis Farm Is Practically Abandoned

Efforts to drill a test well on the Davis farm south of town were abandoned Saturday due to unanticipated disputes with landowners. Negotiations had targeted an acreage agreement to secure drilling with Murchison Pige and associates, with some owners remaining hopeful for a later deal to enable an early test near Paradise Creek just south of town.

Rudolph Streit Dies at 48 in Southwest County

Rudolph Streit, 48, longtime pioneer farmer, died yesterday after months of illness at his home fourteen miles southwest of Vernon. Funeral services were held at 2 oclock at his home with Rev. F. T. Johnson officiating. Interment followed at East View cemetery. Streit, a native of Switzerland, emigrated to America with his family as children. He is survived by his wife Mary Anderson, a daughter Polly, and brothers Fred Alex Godfrey and Albert, all residents of the Streit community. Many county friends attended the funeral and procession to East View.

Mrs Ross Recovering After Saturday Operation

Mrs Louis Ross of the Sherwood community was brought to a local hospital for an operation performed Saturday morning. Her condition is satisfactory. A son, Jesse Ross of Dallas, came for the operation.

R. I. Jones Recovering From Illness and Surgery

R. I. Jones, local contractor, has been seriously ill for several days. He was moved to a hospital Sunday and underwent a serious operation. His condition is reported as satisfactory.

City Commission backs potential 5 cent school tax levy

City officials voiced readiness to levy an additional five cents per one hundred dollars if needed to fund operating costs for a first class school system. They cited past tax votes, potential salary adjustments, and hopes the school board can meet expenses without new revenue, noting a projected surplus and about $2,700 extra revenue if enacted.

Sunday School Attendance and Rally Results Noted

Sunday services saw varied attendance across churches with 1286 total in Sunday School and a 357 boost in collections from the prior week. Central Christian led a final rally for the Sunday School contest against Electra Christian, earning the local church 50 points. other churches reported attendances and small collections, including 4200 at Furs Methodist and 278 at Central Christii Church.

Mrs. C. A. Brown Injured in Cafe Fire Saturday

Mrs. C. A. Brown suffered burns to the hands and arm during a fire at Brown's cafe on North Main Street. The blaze damaged a coffee urn and tables, sparked by a kerosene heater explosion. Firemen arrived while the fire was still burning. Mrs. Brown is recovering rapidly.

Eight year old daughter undergoes appendectomy

The eight year old daughter of Mr. W. A. Lewellen Tolbert was operated on for appendicitis at a local sanitarium last night. The little miss is doing nicely.

ACE Confederate Veteran Buried at Chillicothe

A 92 year old Confederate veteran from Chillicothe died Sunday night at the home of Mars Wilson in Geborne. Funeral services were held at the Paydist in Chillicothe with interment in the Chillicothe cemetery under Masonic auspices. He was the state’s oldest Mason at death, burial beside his wife who died eleven years ago. Masonic guards and numerous relatives attended, with over fifty relatives present from across the state. He was father of ten children, seven living with five daughters and two sons.

First Rotary Test Spudded in Yesterday at Vernon Field

The Church No. 7 on the DP phil south of Vernon began the first rotary test, drilled to 100 feet with Thelma Wells of Wichita supervising. Meeting Opposes Teacher Salary Cuts in Local Schools

A mass meeting of citizens opposed to reductions in salaries for principals and teachers was held in the court room to avert a threatened disorganization of the schools. The School Board renewed H. J. Dohoney as superintendent and refused salaries for principals. The board plans to cut high school teachers salaries, and Principal N. Fubeber was reelected but declined. Many teachers fear seeking other positions unless action reverses.
