P Y D Chaney county farm agent says this week s rainfall worth at least 1 000 000 to Wilbarger County saved about 60 000 acres of wheat and boosted cotton plans with 70 000 acres expected this year The rain ranged from 1 2 to 2 inches across sections and farmers begin planting soon as moisture is favorable for a strong stand and early growth.
Vernon residents avoid travel and chores on Friday the thirteenth amid superstition. Some delay plans, others label the date unlucky, while a few consider it lucky and begin new undertakings.
Announcement by W N Martin president of the Willare ey county Singing Convention says the next meeting will be at Hinds Baptist church Saturday night and Sunday May 12 and 13. He urges all singers to attend.

Mrs. B Goodner of Quanah suffered a broken arm when the steering gear locked and the car plunged over the embankment at the Pease river bridge on a Quint event en route from Quanah to Henrietta. Her son W M Goodner drove the car. After surgical care here and repairs, she resumed her trip.
L Richards, planter of Fufalia Aln, visits his nephew T T Richards of this city, accompanied by S B Wood of Abbeville Ala. Richards says the boll weevil has damaged Alabama cotton to such an extent that cotton growing is a risky business there.
A Pure Food Week announced by Vernon Presbyterians with a May 2 start includes a fashion show with living models, a baby show, and a fiddlers melee. Mrs George Zachry of Greenville reports plans to attract big crowds, hoping to mirror Wichita events, at the Hindu building on the square.

C. J. Farrell purchased the Bennett and Rogers building on West Wilbarger Street for about 12000 dollars. The structure, one of the city’s most valuable auto mobile accessory and filling station sites, will be leased by Farrell to Adams and Veteto.
May 5 marks this year’s Muay picnic the first Saturday in May with preliminary preparations under way. The gathering at Watts Grove, three miles north of Doans, has long anchored the region’s history with big crowds, political speakers, and local festivities. Thousands are expected to attend as the grounds and roadreportedly remain in good condition for the event.
Scores of Vernon Masons plan to attend the Maskat Temple circus in Wichita Falls from April 23 to 25. The event, set on Moore and Richart’s lot near the post office, features changes from last year with some games removed and others retained by the Shriners.

A. M. Bourland has resigned from the chamber of commerce directorate. The president said his duties with the commissioners court made service on the board impossible. His private interests include one of the county’s largest farms. Bourland, serving a second term as president, was re-elected at the start of the year and is widely known in the community.
Dr. Joseph Whitesides of Sea Chow University arrived in Vernon on Thursday and will preach at First Methodist Church in morning and evening services Sunday. He has spent about 20 years in China and witnessed the awakening of the country, including dangerous times during uprisings and persecution of Christians.
Mrs A N Vernon named chairman of donations for Near East committee at a federation meeting. She has not yet set a committee but will do so soon. Dallas Federated Clubs asked to donate to orphans with a rate of five thousand dollars monthly or forty dollars yearly per child. Details on Vernon plan pending.
The Central Christian Church plans an evangelistic campaign with a tabernacle to be erected for the event. The building will enclose Sunday school rooms for the growing Sunday school. Harrel Biard, former choir director, will assist. Ice cream and cake were served after the business session.
A district meeting at Odd Fellow hall decided the encampment branch of the Odd Fellow order will be instituted here on May 1. District Chief Patriarch Pogue of Chillicothe attended. Twenty have joined as charter members and about fifty more are expected to sign before the charter closes.
M Harvey, residing in East Vernon, remains in critical condition after a second stroke of paralysis suffered Wednesday. His children are at his bedside. Mrs. Mattie Turnbow and Mack Harvey of Quanah arrived Wednesday to be with him.
The Star Telegram prints a three column staff article by Sillmean Praus detailing Vernon’s appeal to the state technological college should it be located there. It highlights Vernon’s proximity to three types of land, all sub irrigated, and argues these features set Vernon apart from other towns.
J B Arlitt of Austin, a leader in municipal bonds, writes Vernon chamber offering to explain how a gas plant can be secur ed at low cost and pay for itself in a few years. He cites successful California and Pacific coast plants using crude gas. Chamber secretary Townsend forwarded the letter to the city commission who will consider the proposal at the next meeting.
Miss Vern Tlarrington hosted the Choral division of the Mustelans club at her West Paradise Street home. Mrs J C Christian directs the group as they rehearse spring choruses for Community Week. All 28 members urged to attend next Wednesday meeting. attendees listed include W W Bennett and others.
Wilbarger County fruit growers may enjoy a fair crop after a late freeze, county agent P. T. Chaney reports. Overall trees show a good average stand despite some damage to fruit on trees and minor nip to branches, with expectations of meeting home demand.
Mr and Mrs E Lloyd returned home from Orlando Florida where they spent the winter visiting their sons R B E and W Lloyd They were accompanied by their daughter MR KR W Ferrell who has been there nine months and by their son W Lloyd who will remain for a short visit.
Mra. M. Binir county tax collector reports a batch of 500 automobile plates arrived. The first plate in the lot is numbered 04-649, with sequential issuance likely imminent. The arrival supports ongoing vehicle registration operations.
Public school students from nine counties converge on Vernon for the district interscholastic meet. Declamation, debating, and literary events fill the high school, with a baseball game at the fair grounds and tennis on West Wilburger street. Mrs. Paul Goetze leads host arrangements as 850 to 900 visitors are expected. limited hotel space means many stay with local families and in furnished homes.
