Vernon banks show unusually healthy status with about 560,000 more deposits than last year. Total deposits now 8,774,071.70, compared to just over 2,000,000 previously. Farmers and merchants are improving. Saturday crowds and better cash flow suggest a strong local economy. Bankers foresee continued prosperity for Vernon and Wilbarger County unless a rapid shift occurs.
John Storey was named district attorney to replace A Nicholson who resigned to join Great Southern Life Insurance in Dallas. Governor Pat Neff appointed him, and he began duties in Crowell after taking the oath. Storey previously served nearly three years as Wilbarger County attorney and was among applicants based on his district experience.
Vernon hosts a two day district interscholastic meet starting Friday with opening ceremonies in the high school auditorium. The event features debates and track and tennis competitions among nine counties, with Wilharger delegates and multiple county winners listed in the literary and spelling contests.
Vernon district court failed to convene as planned with a special term postponed. Visitors will host 100 school children for an interscholastic meet and housing is requested from residents. County attorney Wourdy announced and Vernon residents are asked to offer rooms or contact local officials.

H P Hyde, a former Wilbarger County resident from North Carolina, died Wednesday at his home in Altas Olde. He moved to Wilbarger 16 years ago and later to Altas where he resided until death. Hyde was a Baptist, prominent Mason and Odd Fellow. Daughters Mrs Jim Crisp of Pargo Mrs Robert Owen of Deans and Mrs Carl Snyder of Vernon attended the funeral.

Edwin Colhim, 17, narrowly avoids severe injury when an auto nearly runs him over at Tease Street and Main. The car, driven by a woman, stopped within a few feet after she hit the emergency brake as witnesses watched. The boy was frightened but unharmed.
Ray was elected to the board of education of the Amarillo dependent school district in a Saturday election. He appeared on the ballots and defeated the opponent who sought re election by eight votes. Ray previously resided in Vernon for years and once published the Vernon Record.
The Brownt Investment Company of Dallas purchased $1,500 of six percent warrants at ninety seven and a half cents. Warrants will fund water works and electric light equipment. progress on water works is good and completion is hoped. Committees appointed: finance chaired by J. Pendleton, street and bridge chaired by Owen, buildings chaired by Rogers.
A large barn and con pens on the Coleman farm near Margo burned early Friday. The blaze destroyed structures valued at about 1200 dollars and damaged feed and harness worth several hundred. Occupants Wood and Murdock and others reported not discovering the fire until it was too late. Three head of stock in stalls were saved. A strong wind intensified the flames.
A meeting of the Parent Teachers association will be held Thursday at the high school. Officers will be elected for the coming year and delegates to the Child Welfare Conference will be selected. The program will feature a talk on Most and Why and suggestions for next year's program.
The Vernon city commission appointed J. B. Morris O. Ronse and C. J Ashon as school trustees to succeed KR De Illough Kiwery Rhoads and PT Ty House. Library trustee Owe dtrunseon was named to replace Wylie Bentgett who resigned to join the city commission. The board reorganized with the new member and discussed routine city affairs as improvements proceed.
Court house officials report serious disruption in county affairs as Commissioner Archer is confined with the disease Tolbert, and Sheriff Keesee is stricken with smallpox on Monday.
Stonewall Bailey, proprietor of the Palley Hotel, was elected vice president of the newly formed Red River Valley Hotelmen's Association created Friday night in Wichita Falls. More than 20 hotel operators in Texas and Oklahoma were named charter members.
Confederate veterans travel from here to New Orleans by train for a reunion in the city. The group, many in gray uniforms and bronze Loners medals, recounts shared memories, with family members sending well wishes and gifts for the journey. The convoy includes J A Creager L A Stalcup W P Penton and others, plus accompanying women and relatives, as they depart to relive the days of the Civil War.
