Pure Food Show in Vernon Opens with Week of Events

Vernon’s Pure Food Show opens in the Shire building on North Main, hosted by the Presbyterian Auxiliary. The fair features booths by local firms selling groceries and household goods, daily events including a baby contest won by Francis Marie Smith, and nightly programs with local clubs and musicians. Major local banks, stores, and businesses contribute displays and donations, with rotating attractions from Wednesday through Saturday and a general countywide invitation.

Vernon Track Team To Meet Chillicothe

Vernon High School track team meets Chillicothe High School in a Thursday practice meet at Fair Park at 2 45. Chillicothe is the county leader in Hardeman to date, having beaten Quand and lost only to Vernon last year. Coach R B Galbraith predicts a slim Vernon victory by four points as Chillicothe seeks revenge. A small gate fee funds travel to the state meet.

Bible Class Reorganized for Business Men Here

Returns From County School Trustees Election Delayed

County Superintendent L. A. ifne law states returns from Saturday’s election have not yet been received. Election workers have five days to submit totals to the present trustees, who then have five days to file with Mr. Flollar. Ballots carried no printed names and the vote was very light.

Mr and Mrs L F Bell depart for a lengthy tour of south and central Texas. On the return trip Mr Bell plans a short visit with his mother in Sherman.

New Sand Struck Friday Promises Strong Production

South Vernon Company’s Stephens No. 3 well in the South Vernon field tapped a promising oil sand at 1,295 feet. A cave in halted early tests, but oil rise reached 17,100 feet, suggesting a larger output once cleaned and tested. Equipment arriving today aims to push completion. estimates rival 200 to 300 barrels per day. The No. 3 sand is distinct from Nos. 1 and 2, indicating three productive sands on the Stephens lease.

Ro Vy Manis owner of Pioneer Auto Supply leases corner of North Main and Olive Street from Mrs Mary Ruth Pickens to construct a modern double drive in filling station with forty foot frontage and 110 foot awnings. Manis will offer auto accessories while the former building will house a furniture store and nearby shops relocate to Webb building.

Local builder gets contract at Davidson

O A Swinburn, local contractor, awarded a two story brick building contract in Davidson for Dr. Wilson and HW Norwood. The fifty by sixty foot structure will house a garage and filling station on the first floor and a lodge for Masons on the second. Estimated cost about 15000 dollars and construction to start at once. Built in the Vernon Record style with similar brick and line.

Vernon wins push to host the Texas Retail Coal Dealers Association annual meeting set for May 21 22 with about 125 visitors expected from Texas and beyond. Senior Wood of Colorado will address the convention as other coal industry leaders attend and an open sessions program includes band concerts swimming car rides and social events.

Funeral of Mrs J P McCaleb Held Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia McCaleb were held Saturday at the Leckett community home, followed by burial beside her husband J P McCaleb in East View cemetery. The rites were led by Rev Pagar Wipepin with Rev J W Kaw assisting, and pallbearers included sons and other family members who had cared for the family. Out-of-town relatives arrived from Anson for the funeral.

Sunday Sunday School Attendance Rises Across Churches

Attendance jumped at several churches on the latest Sunday. Fleet Methodist reports 656 present with a large collection, Baptist Church 348 present with 813.74, Church of Christ 80 present with 732, ESA Christian Church 17 present with 16.56, Presbyterian 116 present with 41.60, Lutheran 45 present with 27. The total attendance across all Sunday schools reaches 1211 with a substantial collection.

Vernon High School baseball crushed Chillicothe High 22 to 2 at Fall Park in a dominant season opener. A rare triple play, strong early lead, and solid batteries powered the locals as 8000 fans witnessed the high scoring game. Former Vernon Resident Killed in Fort Worth Pistol Duel

Dr. Ivl E. Holcomb 32, son of BOF Holcomb and former Vernon resident, died after a pistol battle in Fort Worth following a drug store dispute near Magnolia Avenue and Henderson Street. Herbert Green, ex-Thurber resident, was fatally wounded. Mrs Myrtle Doss Trooks was arrested on assault with intent to murder charges related to statements by Green. Holcomb studied in Fort Worth, worked as company physician for T and P Coal at Thurber, and had recently returned to the city. Vernon citizens recall him as a former school superintendent’s son and Holingerth Training School founder’s offspring.

Modern Woodmen elect officers for base ball team

The Modern Woodmen of America elected officers for the baseball team, naming T. P. Lieman as manager and Edgar Chaffin as captain. The squad has uniforms and camp equipment, comes from a recent membership drive, and will practice daily at the fair park. They plan to meet other camps in the district this summer, and many members have strong baseball backgrounds to bolster the team's season.
