Vernal area students Thomas Karten Francis Feltch and Robert Baker have been taking flying lessons from licensed pilot Jay Pope at a small Burns Beach field. They built a hangar, use a Swallow biplane for students, with flights reaching up to 14000 feet. Soon solo flights are planned, with anticipated observation trips over the Green River Lectore Flaming gorges and the Blue mountain region.
Last week representatives from three canal companies and commissioner Leon P Christensen surveyed storage possibilities for Ashley Valley water. George E Wilkins Jerry Murray and L 3 Goodrich led the canal teams. They identified several feasible reservoir sites to boost valley water supply and noted a federal funding push could aid a coordinated makework campaign if all companies support it.

Martin L Jarrell aged 19 was bound over to the district court after a hearing before Justice of the Peace Charles DeMoisy on charges of burglary of the Geo Achton store at Randlett on September 5. He could not post bond and was sent to county jail. His companion Bob Tucker aged 17 was sent to the industrial school in Ogden on Tuesday morning.
Mrs Kennet Young and her two sons from Fruita are visiting with Mrs Youngs sister, Mrs R Henderson, in a local social visit noted in society items.
August 12 1933 Governor Henry H Blood spoke at UBIC Fort Duchesne recounting US Geological Survey notes and a personal frontier tale. He describes 1885 troop arrival under Col Beitlen the Whiterocks Uintah Agency and the no conflict mission, noting peaceful Utes and the fort later becoming Uintah Ouray Indian Agency offices and host to eleven Uintah Basin Industrial Conventions.
Uintah Basin Rodeo committee reports a net of 815 dollars after expenses, donated to the Vernal First Ward building committee to aid in rebuilding the chapel. Chairmen credit volunteers, livestock owners, and riders for a well ordered, successful event despite fewer entries due to northern state quarantine.
Harold M Lundell led three Future Farmers of America judging teams from Utah High School in Provo state contests. The crops team placed fourth with Dale Jensen Neil Caldwell and Leonard Dean. the poultry team took sixth with Wendell Meacham and Larry Calder. the livestock team finished eleventh though hampered by illness of LaVern Hemstreet. About thirty teams entered across livestock poultry and crops. Lundell praised the students and credited Smith-Hughes efforts for statewide success.
Miss Gwen Dolyn Stewart teaches fourth grade and resides in Ogden. Miss Lucile Allred, from Salt Lake City, teaches second grade and studied at the University of Utah and USAC. Both Miss Allred and Miss Stewart are staying with Mrs. Minnie Davis.
The UHS student body officers announce a pop song contest for Vernal residents with a $750 prize for the best entry. Entries must have at least two verses and one chorus if possible and avoid copying college melodies. The contest ends Friday October 13 and manuscripts are due to student body president Dale Jersen.
The Roosevelt Lions with thirty in Vernal presented a Ladies Night program at the Commercial Hotel. Sixty five attendees heard toastmaster M E Lundberg, Lions songs led by L T Wallace and V T Rice, piano solos by Anna Laura Staples, dances and a reading by Miss Green, and W H Buener’s cornet solo. Dr R Warnock toasted the Vernal club as mother club, and J CG Anderson invited the insertion club to Provo Home Coming, with Basin clubs as guests. A return program by Vernal is planned.
Uintah High School opens with numerous new teachers led by John Clark as principal replacing Reed Morris. Ezabeth Ashworth and Lavere Petty join key departments while Ellen Christentoet heads dramatics and speech. Junior high adds Afton Brown and Harold Hullinger. Grace Slaugh becomes office assistant. Senior high enrollment reaches 425. bookstore upgrades include new books area and library, and an extension telephone.
About 200 pm Saturday Walt McQuill introduced a fire at the Little Hele area west of Jackson Creek. F. Fr Lambert led 78 CCC men with tools to the blaze. By Sunday night the fire was under control, traced to human carelessness. watershed and 300 acres of Douglas fir timber destroyed.
Three top teams played seven inning finals on Saturday at Maeser diamond. Maeser beat Lapoint fourteen to twelve, Glines Tridell edged Culnes 8 to 6, and Davis Second Ward won four to one over Vernal. Standings place Lapoint, Maeser, Davis Second Ward, Tridell, Glines. Interest and hoped for more teams in 1934.
The Boy Scouts of Second Ward will move to a new bungalow headquarters purchased by the troop committee led by chairman A Theodore Johnson. The building, 25 by 50 feet, will be placed behind the Second Ward chapel and clad in split pine logs for a neat look. Phil Watkins serves as scoutmaster.

The bishopric and ward officers of the Vernal Second Ward organize a two day event with a carnival dance at Imperial Hall Friday evening and an auction sale dinner and children's dance on Saturday. Proceeds fund ward maintenance.
The second annual series of entertainments to raise funds for the Uintah District of the Tim banogos Council of Boy Scouts will be held next Tuesday across Vernal Lapoint and Provo area venues. Vogue theatre in Vernal will host King of the Jungles with a dance at Imperial. Me Robinson Crusoe plays at Maeser chapel. Provo convention for Scout masters and members on Thursday. Liable to pay Uintah allotment in full again this year.
Unitary School Board members attended a special meeting Tuesday. The Alterra high school registration rose beyond expectations while Monday saw school commence. Ollie Justice’s bus contract from Lapont to Wermal was terminated after deliberation due to increased riders and unprofitability. A few Glines seventh and eighth graders faced transport changes, with Walter Woolley’s committee proposing Vernal Junior High for transport, allowing some isolated students to switch at the cost of fare.
Wells Ashby remains laid up after losing an eye in the past. Mrs John N Davis and Har old visited Salt Lake, with Harold planning a winter at school. Herbert Tyzack doubts Vernal Fort Duchesne road work will improve, needing vast clay. Walter McCoy returned from sheep markets where lamb prices fluctuated up to 8.20. Wilson Murray of Uintah State Bank visited Salt Lake and kept mum on personal plans. Mr and Mrs Bodily announce daughter Sylvia’s marriage to Charles R Richens at Salt Lake temple October 2. Richens heads from Massachusetts as a missionary and will study at BYU in Provo. Roosevelt and Moffat install waterworks first on the Uintah reservation.
A missing purse episode ends with loss of ¢65, a railroad ticket, and a wallet. a newborn black eyed baby girl is born to Mr and Mrs E. H Belcher. Mayor Asiiton returns from the Irrigation Congress to a red flag at his gate. Harden Bennion reports from Salt Lake City. Ed Young’s home is quarantined. Miss Mariéd contracts diphtheria. L A Pike relocates from the reservation for schooling. Byron Eaton weds Lucilla Hadlock on Thursday.
Baldy Mountain and higher peaks were capped with the first snow after clear morning skies. Baldy Mountain was fully white Tuesday night. Cold, clear conditions left frost causing little damage to crops. The mountain precipitation will likely boost irrigation water supplies needed for agriculture.
The annual Chrysanthemum show sponsored by the Business and Professional Women club will be held in October. All persons with chrysanthemums are invited to enter displays. Date and rules to be announced later.
Isaac Burton and wife along with Miss Marie Burton have returned from Salt Lake City. They were joined by Miss Jennie Burton who will attend school the coming year.
