Christina Jenkins daughter of S A and Lucretia Jenkins died Friday morning at Campbell hospital after an appendectomy. Funeral services were held Sunday at Maeser chapel with Bishop Lester Bingham in charge and a large gathering of relatives, friends, and classmates. Interment followed at Vernal cemetery. Christina, a fifth grade student at Maeser school, was born February 1 1922 in Roosevelt Utah. She is survived by parents and several siblings and was honored by a large community turnout.
John N Davis and son Clite traveled to Kansas City via Rock Springs with their lambs before proceeding to Salt Lake. Judge McConnell and Don EB Cblton were in Salt Lake for business and a conference. Born to WS Henderson’s wife a daughter on September 25. Charles A Johnson of Vernal Light returned from Missouri Valley Iowa after tending his ill mother, who passed away. Mrs Henry J Chatwin returned from Jensen after recovering from a recent runaway injury. About fifteen Vernal teachers took exams last week with expectations at least half will pass. the questions were less difficult than last summer.
A potato project supervised by Jesse A Haws sends 23 boys from Vernal Second Ward Teachers quorum on a five day trip to Salt Lake City. Donations by Walter Gollier and A Theodore Johnson supported travel. The group sold over 6000 pounds of potatoes, with proceeds defraying trip costs and contributing to the Second Ward Boy Scout home. Four Eagle Scouts are present. The itinerary includes temple work and visits to local sights, marking a successful second year for Mr Haws.
Supervisory Mosiah Hall and L R Humphreys of the State education department visited the local high school and county library Monday. Hall oversees vocational rehabilitation and libraries. Humphreys handles agricultural work in high schools. They discussed solving classroom problems and improving library services. Six new disability cases are listed for rehabilitation, with three of them high school students ready for free vocational training after graduation.
Uintah School Board votes unanimously to close all county schools on Thursday and Friday October 2 and 3 to send teachers to the Utah Educational Association meeting in Salt Lake City. Pay docked if attendance is skipped. Bus contracts and transportation issues are resolved or proposed, with loans to cover payroll.
West Side High at Alterra plans a busy winter in Region Five through the Utah Athletic association. Principal Reed Morrill notes strong basketball material and optimistic prospects with Jesse Hullinger leading the program. A new gym 70 by 40 feet with a 22 foot ceiling is nearing completion. The school year began September 26 with high registration prompting another teacher addition. A baseball team has formed under Hullinger and will meet Roosevelt Friday. A West Side social for faculty and other west side teachers is set for Friday at Alterra.
Montain States Telephone and Telegraph company begins installation of advanced equipment in its new building. OO H Strebel and A E Paulik from Western Electric arrived from Salt Lake City and started work on Monday. The Vernal station will join a network between Denver and Salt Lake City with extensive wiring and future carrier amplifiers.
At a regular meeting the Vernal City Council advanced steps for free mail delivery by creating a plotted map of residences and businesses with numbering and street designations. The council also approved a transfer of the MST and T franchise, considered extending water service to six homes, and noted the city’s strong finances with $9400 bonded indebtedness and a favorable outlook from Mayor Cooper.
County board extends delinquent tax deadline to December 20 due to citizen petition. Officials discuss speed limits and safety measures for the Jensen bridge approach, appoint a traffic enforcement constable and a justice of the peace, and review traffic hazards from nearby stores and hotels.
Plans for the Vernal Second Ward Gala Day festival on Friday and Saturday October 3rd and 4th include an Imperial Hall Gala Frolic with talent acts and dancing, a noon Relief Society Gala Day Chicken Dinner, a children's dance, an auction, and a bazaar. Proceeds will fund ward maintenance.
Utah voters faced careful ballot marking for federal prohibition repeal in the November 17 election. The lengthy ballot lists two main tickets for ratification and anti ratification with separate candidate lists and blank spaces for write ins. State amendments on minimum wage for women and minors and repeal of prohibition provisions are also on the ballot, with wet and dry candidate lists for city and town offices.
The state plans use of rock asphalt on US 40 near Ouray Canal to Jensett and on US 46 from Vernal to the Colorado line. Projects in Uintah county aim to employ hundreds of workers, with 6000 tons mined west of Vernal for spring paving and a $75 000 gravel and surfacing job west of Vernal.
The contract for a 46 mile Victory highway segment on US 40 through Maybell Colorado was awarded to J H Monaghan and A S Horner with a bid around 72000 dollars. The project aims to finish in about sixty days if weather allows, employing seventy teams. The road will run from the Yampa River through Maybell toward the Templeton place.
Mr Young and wife left for the Samoan mission field with A F Young providing transport to Salt Lake. Yarnell’s saloon closed as Mayor Ashton withheld a license until city council action. L B Wilder of the Dyer mine reports clean ore in sight and full bins. a fall run at the smelter may wait until next year. Sheriff Preece and daughter Nellie visited Baowngs Park. Miss Behen aided her aunt Mrs Crouse who is ill. Frank Beers and wife arrived from Pleasant Grove to manage local business interests. Mrs Beers will stay weeks in the millinery shop.
