Moon Lake Opens Bids for Substations

Moon Lake Electric Association opened bids Monday for the erection of substations at Vernal Utah and Rangely Colorado to transform 138000 volt storage project power down to distribution levels. The Wasatch Line Construction Co. of Salt Lake City is the apparent low bidder for high and low voltage substations. Bids also covered 87 miles of 25000 volt distribution line from Douglas Pass to Rangely. Eight other firms submitted bids.

Former Mission Head to be Speaker Here

License Granted for Craft Shop in Vernal City

At a Vernal City Council meeting last week Betty Colabella and Gladia Asmus sought four licenses to open an arts crafts and hobby store. The store will rent decorations offer demonstrations sell floral arrangements mosaics and centerpieces from the former North Vernal Avenue telephone building. They attended the Aleena Floral Designing Convention in Temple City California last month and aim for a grand opening by October 10.

DUP Museum Open House Draws Crowd

Vernal hosts the Daughters of Utah Pioneers museum open house from 10 am to 8 pm drawing enthusiastic crowds. Visitors pledged family funds to enrich the collection, with new display cases planned for incoming relics. The hall featured fall bouquet decorations and light refreshments. The oldest relic shown is a handmade chair carried across the plains. DUP officers and committee chairs are listed, including Norma McLean president Enid Hatch first vice president Mile Haws second vice president and Beatrice Rooks choir director.

Washers drain Mohars’ cash in soggy money mishap

A local couple, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mohar, discovered their weekend business receipts were shredded by an unsecure washing machine. About $1500 in currency was salvaged in tiny fragments, later notarized and sent to Washington, D. C. for potential recovery.

Basin Schools Close for UEA Convention

Uintah Basin schools will be closed Thursday and Friday as most educators attend the annual Education Association convention in Salt Lake City. Dr. Lyman V. Ginger of the University of Kentucky School of Education is keynote speaker. Dr. Dave Darland will speak as well.

Ten Year Postponement Seen On Monument Access Road

Vernal Chamber of Commerce officials report a ten year delay for a bridge at Split Mountain and an approach road to Blue Mountain near Dinosaur Monument. U.S. Park Service director Conrad Wirth favors reallocating funds to build the bridge and a new highway to Seens, with an estimated $100,000 bridge cost and $400,000 for highway work. Budget for 1962 63 discussed and approved at eleven thousand five hundred dollars.

Fire Alarm Test Terrifies Downtown Shoppers

An hour long test of a new combined fire alarm and Civil Defense warning system rattled pedestrians on downtown streets Monday afternoon. People covered ears and shouted as loudspeakers hurled sound outward in all directions during the 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. test, drawing crowd anxiety and scattered reactions from bystanders.

Elk harvest grows as hunting opens across diverse ranges

Elk of all sizes have been taken in the first week of the season with at least 90 hunters bagging elk since Saturday. Dyer Ridge remains the best area, though elk are scattered across the range from East Park to Trout Creek and Grizzly Ridge. Fire danger remains high despite favorable weather, prompting strict safety reminders.

Wildlife Federation Board to Meet in Vernal Utah

Utah Wildlife Federation board of directors plans a two session meeting in Vernal on Saturday and Sunday. Darnell Jaws announces agenda includes budget talks with Fish and Game, license increase, Powell Slough action, a conservation officer proposal, committee assignments, decals for sustaining business houses, and a 1903 convention reference. A Utah Highway Patrolman stopped a stolen car west of Vernal on U S 40. Three men Allan Taylor 20 Thomas J Albritton 22 and Bobby Joe Bryant 25 admitted they were Florida prison escapees and are held for federal authorities under the Dyer Act.

Two Car Crash Causes $550 Damages and Minor Injuries

A two car collision Wednesday of last week at 2 30 p m at the intersection of 2nd West and 4th South caused $550 damages. A three year old child sustained minor injuries. Mary Blaine Powell 21 of 250 West 4th South drove a 1953 Ford valued at 250 in damage. Joan Gardner Smuin 22 of Route 2 drove a 1958 Pontiac with 200 in damage. Senate panel funds Ouray Project study and Provo River work

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee added 280000 in planning funds for three Utah projects including one in Uintah County. A 30000 grant starts a study of the Ouray Project reported by Senator Wallace F Bennett. The panel also approved 260000 for the Provo River portion of the Central Utah Project and 50000 to start Seyler River Basin studies.
