Winter range movement and range management details

Embezzlement Offense Draws 1-10 Year Term

Offense Linked to 1054 Olds Vehicle Not By Bad Rich

In a case dated October 30, 1961, the suspect was connected with a 1054 Olds and ruled not to be Bad Rich of Vernal. He was remanded to the county sheriff for transfer to the State Penitentiary warden.

Phenomenal Growth of LDS Church Cited

Eilder Franklin D Richards cited rapid growth of the LDS Church at Ashley Stake conference. He noted a mission area baptized 1000 members in one month. Richards urged every member to be a missionary and teach by the Spirit. Attendees reached 1225 of stake membership. Nearly 12,000 missionaries now serve worldwide, up from 6000 a year ago.

Funeral Honors Lapoint Man Blaze Victim

Funeral services for Zacharish Kump, 78, Lapoint, were held Monday at 1 p.m. in Lepoint Ward chapel. Kump died in a fire that destroyed his log and frame home Thursday around 3 55 p.m. Smoke was seen coming from the dwelling by Bryce Erickson of Vernal who contacted Utah Highway Patrol and Roosevelt officers. Erickson, leaving his car, ran to the house and found Kump in bed amid flames. Clifford Hackford joined Erickson as they attempted to reach the burning building but were driven back by the flames. Three Boy Scouts Enjoy Lone Camp Experience

Three Scouts from Troop 237 spent two days at Maple Dell Boy Scout Camp near Payson in a rare self run camp. Gary Nieleen Tenderfoot led with Levi Smutin and Elmer Ridgeway. They fished, swam, and helped build a new campsite before returning to Vernal with plans for future Maple Dell trips.

Wildlife Federation okays plan for junior gun clubs

The Utah Wildlife Federation board approved creating Junior Red and Gun Clubs with co sponsorship by the Federation and The Deseret News. Two pilot clubs were planned at Vernal Rod and Gun Club and Salt Lake County Fish and Game Aesa. Burnell Haws of Verital announced Deseret News will draft an outline for activities as junior members receive wildlife and resource conservation education over three years.

Rites Held for Nine Year Old Traffic Victim

Funeral services were held for Gregory S. Johnson nine who died in a traffic accident on U.S. 40 east of Jensen. His mother Mrs. Jim Johnson and sister Mary were injured and hospitalized with a broken fly and head injury. Trooper K.R.M. Selm of the Utah Highway Patrol investigated. Gregory was born January 24, 1953 in Wichita. Burial followed in Wichita, Kansas with survivors including his parents and siblings.

35th Milestone Celebrated by Vernal Lions

Vernal Lions Club marked its 35th anniversary since chartering on September 30, 1927. Russell Nixon of St. Louis praised Lions International, urged service over status, and cited Lion efforts such as eye tissue banking for the blind. He suggested cancer research as a future project and noted Lions’ community bonds.

Ouray Water Flaming Gorge Fund Included in New Public Works Bill

The U S Senate approved 2 five billion dollar public works appropriation bill including Flaming Gorge and Ouray irrigation projects. Utah allocations total over 14 million for Flaming Gorge Dam and 44 million for Glen Canyon Dam while Upper Colorado River Storage gets 5100 million. Recreation facilities receive 768 thousand and Ouray planning in Utah County gets 20 thousand. The measure now moves to a Senate conference committee for finalization.
