Army Deserter Captured After Long Mountain Ride

Monte Buniger 21, stationed at Fort Warren near Cheyenne, deserted the army and rode a stolen horse across Utah and Wyoming. Officers trailed him from Bennett to Leota Bottoms, cross river, where buniger was captured after a ruse by Sheriff Snyder. He faces grand larceny and related charges and hoped to reach Grand Junction with his wife.

Vernal Premier of Song “Wings” Promises Public Debut

Local Lunch Program to Reopen in Uiniah County Schools

Mrs Lola Chirisensen the hot lunch supervisor notes the Uiniah county pet high project will resume this year in all elementary schools with one WPA worker per school and PTA volunteers. Last winter the program served over 1246 meals daily with 400 000 cans of corn beans peas beets and tomatoes donated from surplus government commodities.

Heavy cattle bring a top price at Ogden yard

A carload of 26 heavy Hereford cattle sold for 10109 at Ogden Union stockyards, setting a new high since 1923. The shipment from Picabo Idaho by Kilpatrick Brothers weighed about 1120 pounds each. This fall’s first truly choice heavy cattle arrival signals strong buyer interest but notes a shortage of top grades. Mr and Mrs Burtrell Hatch visited relatives in Pleasant Grove over the weekend.

Red Cross Drives Comfort Kits for Soldiers

Uintah County American Red Cross launches drive to fulfill 250 comfort kits for soldiers going overseas. Local groups assemble items like pins needles thread razor blades soap stationary envelopes pencils first aid supplies cigarettes and playing cards. Mrs. Tenny Johnston and Mrs. Vern McCarrell lead efforts to finish kits promptly for the county.

Vernal Boys Win Honors in Air Medical Corps

The Vernal area celebrates rapid promotions among locals in the Army Air Forces and Medical Administration Corps. Lt. Noman T. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs A Theodore Johnson, trained at Thunder Bird Field and Bakersfield then earned wings at Lakes Field August 27. He now serves with a fighter squadron at Hamilton Field. Lt. Manwaring, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Manwaring, enlisted November 15, 1941, at Salt Lake City, trained at Camp Grant and Carlyle Barracks, and serves at Camp Forrest, Tennessee.

Aunt Jane McCarrel 88 passed away Wednesday at 2 16 pm. She was born January 19 1854 in Provo Utah, daughter of George Washington Cift and Amanda Faucett. She married Jesse David McCarrel in Midway Utah on January 11 1869, with roots tracing to Wasatch county.

LDS Conference To Be Limited To Priesthood

The 113th semis general conference of the church will restrict attendance to priesthood holders. The First Presidency led by Heber J. Star Actress Laraine Day Sponsors Mormon Battalion

Laraine Day, once of Roosevelt Utah and now a celebrated actress, acts as honorary sponsor for the Modern Mormon Battalion’s final platoon. The induction took place Wednesday at pm on the LDS Business College Campus with Governor Herbert B. Maw as honorary colonel and Kari J. Glade as master of ceremonies. New Industries for Valley Proposed By Vernalite

Vernalite urges the Uintah Basin to build local industry and accept war work. He proposes a planing mill to process virgin timber from Ashley National Forest to replace imported finished lumber, due to the war production freeze. He notes 70 families have left for war work and calls for immediate action to fit into the production scheme.
