Pair Face U S Charges In Indian Slaying
Federal complaints issued in Utah district court accuse two men of murder and assault with intent to commit murder in the Uintah Ouray Indian reservation near Fort Duchesne. The killing of Ute Dick Quiup occurred over stock trespass on Indian land. John Peter Furekis alias Juin Fouros, 53, is charged with murder. John Quiup, 56, is charged as an accomplice. The case falls under federal jurisdiction due to reservation status and victim.

Funeral Services Held Friday For Jane McCarrel
Funeral services were held Friday at 2 pm in the Vernal First Ward chapel for Amanda Jane McCarrel 88 who died Wednesday at her home after an illness. The service was conducted by Bishop Poutha Calder with speakers Clade Rich of Los Angeles and grandson Archie Johnson. The program included prayers by EJ Winder and benediction by J William Workman with hymns Oh My Father and How Great Thou Art sung by the quartet led by Mrs Jorgensen and Bishop Calder. Interment at Vernal Memorial Park followed under Swaln Funeral Home direction. Survivors include Vera McCarrell Lindsey Oaks Frank McCarrell Harden Knobles and Mad McCarrell.

Utah Opens Waterfowl Season October 14 to December 23
State Fish and Game Director Ross Leonard announced that Utah will allow waterfowl hunting from October 14 through December 23 with about 70 days of season. Daily hours run from 7:40 a.m. to 6:05 p.m. Mountain War Time, except pheasant and squall shooting daylight to 4 p.m. Last year’s closing time was 4 p.m. Provo River area from Vivian Park to Provo Canyon mouth remains closed along with Strawberry refuge, Ogden Bay area, and the Farminpton Bay canal outlet. Open species include ducks, brant, scaup, and geese with restrictions. Stewart’s Leake, 15 miles southwest of Vernal, touted as excellent hunting by Game Warden Henry Slaugh.

Abnte Emaline Hamilton a 54 year old Pentecostal missionary from Saginaw Michigan rode through Vernal this week by horse and buggy. She had been to Eugene Oregon and aimed for Denver for the winter traveling about two miles a day on her weathered outfit. She plans to head to Rangely then follow the White River to Meeker after shoeing her horses at Jensen. She has traveled on the road for 22 years and funds her journey by painting models and doing various tasks.

American Legion Enlists Fire Fighters For Forest Duty
Veterans of the last world war will stand ready to help fight major fires on the Ashley National Forest. Witbeck Post No 11 of the American Legion voted to enlist members for the volunteer unit organized by the Defense Council. Forest Ranger Glen Lambert cited high fire danger and the need for citizen volunteers. Coal Mine Near Fruitland Catches Fire
A coal mine near Fruitland in Uintah County caught fire Tuesday 14 miles north of Fruitland in the Red Creek area. Flames shot 50 feet high, with the blaze roaring through an air vent and felt 700 feet away. Thousands of tons of coal were destroyed as the hillside ran with coal veins. officials fear little chance of control. Mine operated about 12 years and supplied fuel for Uintah Basin. no workers were present when the fire started, likely from spontaneous combustion.

Story of Ute Indians Luncheon Topic at Grill Cafe
Ih commemoration of American Indian Day is planned for Friday. Superintendent Wright of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Agency at Fort Duchesne was guest speaker at the Lions Luncheon. Wright told an interesting narrative about the Ute Indians and how they came to Utah. He noted Spanish Fathers in Eastern Utah and the Utes’ early headquarters at what is now known as Spanish Fork. The Uintah Reservation was created in 1841. A treaty with the Utes, submitted to Congress in 1863, was never ratified. The Utes, under the treaty provisions, were to settle at Uintah and named Tabiona after the Indian leader. Following the Meeker Massacre, White River Utes and the Ute bands were dispatched. Buildings of Ashton Firm In Heber Burned
HEBER The store and lumber sheds of the Ashton Building Supply company covering half a city block at first North and Main streets in Heber burned to the ground Sunday afternoon. Loss estimated by management from 375,000 to 108,000. Lowe Ashton, manager, suffered second degree burns and was taken to Heber hospital in serious condition. Fire discovered in the small storage room at 3 pm and spread to adjoining sheds before fire crews could contain it. Sixteen company employees aided volunteer firemen from Heber and Park City. several suffered minor burns. Firemen remained on scene until after nightfall.
