Uintah Bank Names New Official Harold R. Sargent

Harold R. Sargent of Cedar City was elected a director and vice president of Uintah State Bank at a board meeting. He previously worked with Bank of Southern Utah and served as an FDIC examiner in San Francisco. Sargent, a WWII veteran, lives in Vernal with his wife Melba Hunter and daughters Claudette and Eleanor.

Postmaster Urges Use of Return Street Addresses

Vernal Postmaster Pontha Caldey urged residents to include return street addresses on all mail to speed street delivery once it begins. Delivery set for Oct 1 faces delays due to sorting-case shortages and staffing. Vargas Funeral Held Wednesday

Hail Storm Strikes Ashley Valley Area

Saturday evening hailstorm in Ashley Valley caused major damage to corn and silage leaves. In Dry Fork some grain harvests were nearly wiped out while Diamond and other mountain areas saw heavy rain with no damage. The moisture reduced fire danger and cooler air followed, with hail persisting over 24 hours.

Fire department adds new breathing gear for smoke rooms

The Ver nal fire department received two full breathing apparatus outfits this week. Assistant fire chief C R Jeffries said the department needed the equipment for some time and firemen were instructed on its use at a city office meeting Tuesday night. Each outfit includes a mask lungs cannister and tubing.

Echo Park Dam Project Proposed on Green and Yampa Rivers

A proposed Echo Park dam site in Colorado would be on the Green and Yampa rivers near the Utah border. It envisions a 500 kilometer long reservoir providing 4710,000 acre feet active capacity and a power plant of 320,000 kilowatts producing 688 million kilowatt hours annually. The project offers storage, silt retention, recreation, and flood control with flow support during dry years per the Colorado River Compact. The site lies about 20 miles north of U.S. Route 40 and 64 miles from Red Canyon and Lizy Park communities.

Escapee Caught Monday in Texas

Otis Woodring a 24 year old from Snyder Oklahoma fled Uintah county jail by brick escape on Sept 1 and was captured Monday night in Borger Texas. He may face charges of second degree kidnapping and armed robbery in Uintah county. A second inmate Gayle Slaugh was thwarted in a breakout attempt. a passerby reported the scene and Slaugh was returned to Utah State penitentiary.

Echo Park Dam Favored For Early Construction

Uintah Basin leaders and state officials in Roosevelt favor early Echo Park dam development to boost Utah water storage and electrical output. Vernal reports show unanimous support across meetings in Utah for the project with future talks planned in Craig Colorado and a later commission meeting.

Boundaries studied at Dinosaur National Monument tour

Officials from the Bureau of Land Management and Park Service visited the Dinosaur National Monument area to discuss boundaries for better supervision. H Byron Mock led the group with Dale Naylor and George Ingalls among others noting grazing and oil shale considerations. Grazing land conditions were described as reasonably good amid recent fires and favorable precipitation.

Oil activity rises near Vernal with geophysical crews

Geophysical interest signals more oil work around Vernal next spring as at least four exploration outfits operate in the area. Western Geophysical Co. has 12 trucks and 15 cars in Vernal, with other firms including National Geophysical Co., Mountain States Exploration Drilling Co., and Carter Oil Co. active nearby. Carter Oil reported a showing at Dahrkop No 1 in Wasatch county, while plans for a test drill near the Ute Tribal and pipelines from Ashley field to Rangely were discussed.
