Chicago Slayers Get Life Imprisonment
Nathan Leopold and Richard A. Loeb were sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge John R. Caverly for the slaying of Robert Franks. The sentence was handed down Wednesday at 9 30 AM and the pair to be moved later to the Joliet penitentiary in Illinois. News was telegraphed to Vernal Wednesday noon.

Adams to restart saw mill two weeks from now
Dan EF Adams plans to reopen his saw mill within about two weeks after testing the boiler and gear. A small fire caused minor damage to the recently burned mill, but Adams expects a swift rebuild. He will move the mill three hundred yards downstream for better water supply and has many logs ready for a strong fall run.

Obituary Notice of Mrs Josephine Holladay Dies after Long Illness
Mrs Josephine Holladay died after eight years of rheumatism. Funeral services were held September 2 at the First Ward chapel with Bishop Hyrum B Calder presiding. Speakers described her character and faith after a life in Alabama and Utah. She leaves her husband and four children among nine offspring and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment followed at Verral cemetery.

Construction Started On Steel Bridge Over The Uintah River

Mr and Mrs Lynne Ashton returned from Salt Lake City with daughter Ethleyne entering St Marys academy. On a narrow dugway above Fruitland a bolt in the steering wheel failed, narrowly causing a plunge over the embankment. Mrs Ashton kept the car from tipping as tourists from St Louis assisted with repairs to the axles and wheel.

Rains Aid Surfacing on Projects 10A 10B
Moisture from recent rains allows rapid completion of Project 10A and 10B surfacing after a pause. About one more month of work remains on 10A, with bridge completion awaiting material from saw mills. Ashton Gulch bridge is now completed.
Small Fire at Hy Rasmussen Building Friday
Firemen were called Friday afternoon to a building owned by Hy Rasmussen near the George E Adams residence. A stove flue fire from the kitchen started the blaze but was quickly extinguished with little damage reported.

Pack Horse Killed In Ashley Gorge Rock Slide
In Ashley Gorge two hunters Ernest Caldwell and Qwen Hacking were climbing from a steep ledge above the dam when a pack horse slipped over. The horse fell about 200 feet, its head crushed on a boulder. the pack saddle remained intact though the gun on it was damaged. Several bears have been sighted nearby.

Charles McConkie suffered a broken right forearm while cranking his Ford after leaving Vernal for home. He went to the doctor’s office upstairs and waited about an hour as doctors were tied up with an operation. He remarked on the intense pain from the break.

Gipson proprietor of the Vernal and Oxford hotels and Allan manager of the Vernal Auto company returned Monday from Ogden where they attended a Shriners convention that began Saturday. About 2000 Shriners from Idaho, Nevada and Utah participated in the parade. Allan was made a Shriner. Gipson and Allan are the only Shriners in Vernal. They report a profitable and enjoyable time.

Tragic Trench Loader Accident Near High School
A Caterpillar tractor driver, Eston Eaton, was crushed when the machine moved toward a building during remodeling at the high school grounds. Byron Baten directed the work. Dr George H Christy attended. Eaton died at 6 15 p m after severe internal injuries. Funeral services set for Sunday noon at the Vernal Second ward chapel.
