Fire chief warns Vernal schools and businesses face fire hazards after fire drills show definite dangers. He highlights Central School lunch room as a potential trap with only one exit, urging rear entrance construction and ongoing cleanup and cooperation for safety.
Gov. Herbert B Maw will officially open the new Utah Field House of Natural History at dedicatory ceremonies Friday at 1 30 pm. The museum built by the Utah department of publicity and industrial development cost 200 000 dollars and features geological displays of the Utah Basin and more than 10 000 dollars of paintings.
Mr and Mrs P F Lambert of Washington D C and their son Jack visited Vernal last week. Jack has just been released from the navy after four years of service. The Vernal antre taught vernal mechanics at Uintah high school for five years.

James B. Freestone and Vernal tim berman sue Leo F. Dexter and Arthur Corless city officers for assault in Vernal on July 20 with damages of 47 728 99. A Fourth district court hearing set for Nov. 8 will decide whether the complaint stands or is amended or attacked.
The second annual Utah Education Association leadership school runs Thursday to Saturday with nine discussion groups on state educational issues. Dr. R F Hawk of Western Washington College will keynote the banquet at Imperial Hall. L E Parmenter of the National School Service Institute will open sessions and advise on public relations. Public sessions include Saturday 8:45 am summary at Uintah High auditorium.
First annual Utah Turkey Show heads to Provo November 17 to 19 with entries from Utah and western states including Idaho Washington Oregon and California. Harvey Griffin will judge with cash prizes trophies in five divisions for live birds dressed birds and a packers class. Entertainment from Francis Urry Aston Pitt Stuart Grow Webb Holm and others. Entry contacts include Ervil Sanders Ralph Blackham Bill Barlocker Dale Prows Hal Lowry Glen Nielsen Rulon Lowbey Joe Barlow and more with the Utah Turkey Show office in Salt Lake City.
Mr and Mrs Morgan Merkley and sons June and George D returned Friday after Burt J Bohn the son in law of the Merkleys funeral. On the way home they were joined by Mrs Sybil Bohn and her child Richard and Eugene After a week with the Merkleys they will visit Tucson Arizona for the winter.
Maggie Morehouse Lewis 80 died Monday morning at her daughter’s home in Ashley ward Vernal due to age. Born September 17 1868 in Viola Iowa she married William D. Lewis in 1889 at Concordia Kansas. She moved to Vernal in 1917 and is survived by a daughter and two sons Don of Duchesne Arch of Eugene Oregon. Funeral services were held in Ashley ward chapel with Bishop C L Richens presiding. Burial followed in Vernal Cemetery.
Leon Hatch of Pleasant Grova traveled with Mr and Mrs Bankteeks to a deer hunt and visited Mr Hatchs uncle Bera Baten during the outing.
Willard Henry Williams 173 former Vernal sheep raiser died in Salt Lake City Sunday at 8 a.m. of a heart ailment. He was born Sept. 22, 1875 in Mona Utah and spent most of his life in ranching Uintah Basin. Survived by one son and nine daughters, plus siblings and many in laws. Funeral and burial in Santa Monica.
Uintah stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints will hold a conference on November 6 and 7. Archie Johnson, president, reminded members that the assignment of a general authority to the conference has not yet been announced. Visitors included Mrs Dorothy Cassity of Provo and her son Grant Hansen of San Diego with grandson Bill Hansen of Provo, and they were noted during the deer season.
Mrs. Fritz Boan Palmer of Vernal returns to Vernal this week visiting family. Her mother Kate Jean Boan published Vernal’s first newspaper the United Papoose starting January 2 1891. The paper lasted two years before the Vernal Express took over.
Uintah High’s Utes upset league leader Roosevelt Roughriders 28 24 at Jaycee Park. Eddie Davis orchestrated plays with Melvin Weeks scoring two touchdowns and an interception return, while Lowell Caldwell added a touchdown and key runs. Ralph Bryson caught a TD pass as the Utes built a halftime 12 6 lead and extended it in the third quarter.
