County Clerk Charles T. Pope urges Uintah County citizens to register by Oct. 27 and vote in the Nov. 2 general election. A rally is set for Oct. 29 at Imperial Hall with Gov. Maw and Utah leaders attending. absentee ballots available for eligible voters.
National 4 H Achievement Week runs first week in November with two million members nationwide. In Uintah county the highlight is Achievement Day on November 6 at 2 p m at the Second Ward Chapel where over 4 000 4 H club members will receive certificates and pins, with awards from Utah State Bankers Association Montgomery Ward Carnation Co and the State Fair Assn. County staff Whitaker and Ruby Smith urge members to submit project records by November 1 to have certificates ready.
Ada A Vernon 69 longtime LDS temple worker dies at daughter’s Vernal home after illness. Born November 19 1878 in Manti she lived in Manti Idaho and Vernal and spent a decade in Salt Lake City temple service. Survived by husband Andrew J Vernon a son and three daughters including Mrs Leslie Thacker Mrs Charles Palmer Mrs Lloyd Richards Alton Vernon 13 grandchildren one pread grandchild a brother Orson Alten and sister Elnora Vernon. Funeral Thursday 2 pm Vernal Second Ward chapel. Burial Fairview cemetery. Friends may visit Thacker apartment Thursday from 11 am until funeral.

Leaders of the County GOP postponed a planned rally in Imperial Hall for October 27. Uintah county chairman Eugene K Sundquist said the event was delayed after Republican congressional candidate David J Wilson telephoned to reschedule. Scheduled speakers included Mark Anderson for secretary of state A Pratt Keator for attorney general Sherman J Preece for state auditor Marvin Smith and Lawrence Caldwell for Uintah county commission. Sundquist urged all citizens to register and vote in the November general election.
Grant W. Heath of the Vernal Express was named temporary chairman to organize Uintah county Founders Day events on February 28. A local committee including Mrs. Hugh W. Colton Ralph Siddoway Kenneth Sowards and Dr Tyrrell R Seager will assist. Regular officers to be elected at the observance.
Uintah county deer hunting opened slowly but picked up after the weekend. About 600 deer, mostly bucks, checked at Stalnaker draw with Dinsmond and Taylor roads stations less active but still busy. First buck through Stainaker was a two point shot by Bud McNeill of Vernal at 10 30 a m Saturday from Brush Creek. Two youths were injured by accidental gunfire on Oct 16 and 19, Billy Burton and LaVolie Duvall, both in satisfactory condition. Fair weather and mountains kept hunting challenging. about 1000 cars carried hunters to the Vernal Manila highway opening day, with many still returning. Don Jensen, Vernal Gun and Rifle Club president, said there are lots of deer but some hunters were less enthusiastic.
Approximately 250 delegates have reservations for the Utah Education Assn Leadership Meet to be held October 28 to 30 at Uintah High School. Nine discussion groups will tackle state educational problems, with Dr. R. F Hawks of Western Washington College delivering the keynote at a banquet October 29. Local committee members coordinate housing, meeting place, and entertainment for the event and hosts include Uintah County Education Assn members and partners.
Kenneth Sowards, president of the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce, announced a campaign to mobilize county residents to register and vote in the general election on November 2. The effort will use handbills posters loudspeakers and radio spots. He noted that last election saw voter participation nearly double and credited part of the rise to Jaycee activity.
Seven Uintah county men were ordered to report for physical examinations at Fort Douglas on October 25. The notices were announced by Milda Slaugh, Uintah county selective service clerk. Names listed include Fred A. Lone Bear of Ouray, Albert Brucher of Vernal, Frank R. Cesspooch of Randlett, Orson William Johnson of Lapoint, Joseph B. Wallace of Jensen, Hugh Jenks of Ouray, and others.
Salt Lake City Mayor Earl J. Glade leads nearly 100 business and civic leaders on a two day goodwill visit to Uintah Basin. The tour stops include Heber Duchesne Roosevelt and Vernal with meetings, luncheons, and a breakfast with officials before returning to Salt Lake City.
Ed H. Watson Utah state engineer called the upper Colorado river compact signed in Santa Fe a fair and equitable agreement for all states involved. He spoke in Vernal while investigating water problems and opportunities for the Central Utah project. He said Utah stands to gain from development, electricity and other benefits in the Uintah Basin and beyond. He predicted swift Utah Legislature approval in January.
Mrs. Martha C. Josephson of Salt Lake City will be main speaker at the Uintah LDS stake speech institute in Vernal First ward, with Mrs. Grant H. Calder announcing that Salt Lake teacher Mrs. Caroline E. Miner will attend. Sessions Saturday 8 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. feature programs on effective speaking, speech clinic, vocal solos, debating, and panel discussions led by stake YWMIA leaders and educators.
Uintah stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold quarterly sessions in Vernal on November 6 and 7 with stake clerk C Laurence Fox announcing. A welfare meeting is set for Saturday November 6 at 6 30 pm in the First Ward chapel and a priesthood readership session will follow at 8 pm in the stake tabernacle. General sessions for all members are planned Sunday November 7 at 10 am and 2 pm. future visiting general authorities were not announced. Pearl Butler of Ogden is visiting two weeks with his parents.

He urged a three point program: massively increase armaments, retain the atom bomb secrets, and unite non communist nations to curb communism. He warned Russia has the means for war and a total war geared economy.
