Oil Progress Week Sets Vernal Well Event

An eight year old Vernal boy narrowly escaped serious injury after climbing a tree and touching a 7200 volt line, then falling eighty feet. He recovered enough to return to school Tuesday. The event kicks off with a practical water well drill and free barbecue next week as Vernal observes Oil Progress Week with talks by Standard Oil geologist Bob Locke and a joint Industry and Chamber of Commerce banquet featuring Frank Neighbor. A parade, field tour of Ned Wash Oil field, and a live drilling demonstration close the day with a free barbecue for attendees.

Registration Dates Set for Vernal City Election

Registration dates for the November 5 Vernal City election are set for October 16 and October 29. Registration offices for Vernal City precincts will be open from 8 am to 9 pm. Vernal residents register at James Chivers' home 141 No. Vernal Avenue and at Evelyn Richardson's home 138 So. 1st West.

Two Vernalites Injured in Smashup and Married Next Day

Two Vernal residents, Herman Hingham and Neva Atem Bireet, were injured in a head on collision Sunday near Grantsville. They were married Monday night in a hospital room before clerk Willard Sazers, Bishop of Tooele Eight Ward, as they recovered from injuries including leg fracture and skull fracture.

Flu Outbreak Forces 25 Percent Absences in Uintah District

Influenza sweeps Uintah District with about 20 to 25 percent of students sent home. Total absences near 600 across all schools, with highs at Central and high schools. Monday absences include 126 at the high school and 50 at Central, rising to 113 Tuesday. Schools closed Thursday and Friday for a teachers convention in Salt Lake City. officials hope a long weekend aids recovery and normal attendance resumes soon.

Roosevelt Area Schools Hit Hard By Influenza Bug

Roosevelt area schools report sharp flu impact with up to 35 percent absence at Roosevelt Junior High and about 22 percent at Wate Union Wh school. Roosevelt Elementary shows around 25 percent out, with six students missing at Myton Elementary nine miles west. Principal John Blaine notes multiple teachers absent and ongoing illness.

A Citizens Party mass meeting at the courthouse nominated Mayor Ralph Siddeway for a second four year term by acclamation and named Tondo Sullivan and Glade M. Sowards for four year city council seats. Vacancies on the council include Fred Washburn and Dale Jensen term expirations. Whitney Hammond chaired, Sublivan secretary. vacancy committee listed Slaugh Hopkins and Adamson. Progressive Party will meet next Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the courthouse.

Steinaker Reservoir Work Predicted to Begin in 1958

Sen Arthur V. Watkins told Vernal Chamber of Commerce that Steinaker project should start early in 1950 and may run with Colorado’s Paonia project as first Upper Colorado River Development works. Final tests begin on Vernal City's recently completed sewage treatment plant costing 304000 dollars designed for 5000 people. City officials note gravity flow minimizes pumping, saving long term costs, with a maximum daily capacity of 2.7 million gallons and staged primary sedimentation to handle organic material.

Very Good Prospects Forecast For Deer Hunters

Local game wardens Lloyd Stevens Clarion Hult and Udell Gardiner forecast very good prospects for opening day October 19. Deer fed well this winter with water and feed. a sharp-eyed resident hunter could bag up to 41 deer including archery general and special permits. Wardens noted Blue Mountain and nearby areas, cautioned on limited gas, supplies, and rough terrain. Indian lands require special permits and favorable conditions may extend through November 11 and 16.

Wool Price Set For Next Year By Agriculture Department

The Agriculture Department Friday announced an incentive price for wool produced next year at 02 cents per pound, unchanged from the past three years. A previous increase to 168 tents was rejected after industry pleas. The National Wool Act of 1954 authorizes payments when market prices fall below the incentive level, which is expected to exhaust funds. Mohair support remains at 40 cents per pound.
