Conventions Set for City Nominations in Uintah County

Progressive Party plans a convention on Thursday October 6 at 7 30 p m in the Uintah County Building Courtroom to nominate candidates for mayor and two council seats. The Citizen Party has not fixed a site or date but must meet before October 10 as required by law to allow filing October 11. Candidates may be nominated by petition with 25 resident voters and forms available at the city office. Residents must register by November 8 for four year terms. absentee ballots and residency rules are outlined for disabled and absent voters.

Auto theft chase reaches 100 mph on Utah roads

Nineteen year old John Spencer Stewart led Utah Highway Patrolman Gary Cutler on a high speed pursuit from Vernal toward U S 40 culminating at a 100 mph stretch near the Twelve mile bridge. Kathleen Smith reported her stolen pickup at the Utah Museum of Natural History as the chase unfolded.

Utah Gas Service Receives PSC Price Increase

The Utah Public Service Commission approved a pass-through rise in natural gas prices for Utah Gas Service Co. About a 1.40 monthly increase for the average residential bill may be lowered if a supplier’s FTC approval is not granted. Utah Gas serves nearly 4,010 customers across Daggett Uintah Grand and San Juan counties. Average annual bills rise from 289.92 to about 307.00 if fully enacted.

Vernal City approves water and sewer policy changes

Vernal City Council approved cutting the sewer connection fee by fifty percent for abandoned laterals that are rehabilitated or replaced. They also added a new waterline extension policy to provide more flexibility for 10 inch lines, affecting about 2 000 acres.

Plane Crash Near Vernal Kills Two Men

Two Vernal men Arthur Lee Pong 26 and Clarence Estes 27 died when their Bellanca two seater crashed five miles southeast of Vernal about 6 15 PM. The crash near Harrison Auto Wrecking Yard injured none onlookers, wreckage cleared by EMTs and sheriff's deputies. Both men employed by Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp. Estes survived by wife Lauwanna Kay Gardiner and children Billy Daye and Tabatha Kay Poag is survived by his mother, grandmother. investigation by Uintah County authorities.

Local pool offers AAU swimming team for youths

Arnie Anthon, a swimming instructor, seeks 100 more members aged 6 to 18 to form an AAU team. Eligible youths must swim two pool lengths and commit to regular practice and meets. Parents must participate in a dedicated advisory council to arrange transportation and manage summer and winter competition against Utah Colorado Wyoming Idaho and Nevada teams. Anthon previously coached an AAU team in Logan City for three years.

Vernal Youths Escape Injury In High Speed Crash

Two sixteen year olds in Vernal escaped serious injuries after a 1968 Ford ton pickup lost control on a washboard road. The vehicle overturned into a ditch at about 70 mph, struck a culvert and pole, then slid and totaled the truck. Damages were about 2800 dollars. the driver was cited for reckless driving.

Second body found at Flaming Gorge

A male body was found at 1 am on October 2 at Jug Hollow near Lucerne Marina in Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Park Ranger Larry Mullin reported the body lying in sand with lower legs in the water after the water level dropped 52 feet. Authorities had earlier recovered another body on June 12, 1977, identified as one of four fishermen drowned May 22, 1972, with periodic searches continuing for the remaining victims.

First oil shale royalty check paid to state

Utah reports its first royalty from oil shale last month. The $24 payment marks a possible U.S. first for a government agency.
