Forakis Gets 15 Years In Slaying Charges

John Peter Forakis a 52 year old Uintah Basin farmer was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for second degree murder by District Judge Tilman D. Johnson. A Greek native, Forakis was convicted by a jury for shooting and killing Dick Quipp an Indian on September 15 on the Uintah Ouray Reservation. The killing followed an earlier dispute over horses and cattle on Quipp’s farm.

Former Vernal Youth Assigned To Alaskan Post

Casey A Maupin announces Vernal Utah native Louis A Roberts has been named assistant territorial supervisor of American Red Cross recreation for the armed forces in Alaska. Roberts, a former WPA recreation district supervisor in Los Angeles County, will work under Major John T Carlton. He was a USC health and physical education staff member in 1939 40 while pursuing a master of arts in physical education and recreation. Continued on Page five.

Fleet of Trucks to Mines Today for Coal Shortage

Mayor B OH Stringham led a Wednesday rally of county and city officials civic groups and coal operators to address a county wide coal shortage. A fleet of trucks will depart Thursday morning to move coal from mines with orders to be left at the city office. West side headquarters not yet decided. Trucks will be fed a price raise will apply to all coal grades. Seek mine work through coal operators due to labor shortage.

Corporal Claudius A Banks Sent Overseas in Army Corps

Claudius A Banks son of Mr and Mrs W A Banks has been promoted to corporal in the Army Quartermaster Corps and transferred to overseas duty. He is a Westminster College graduate from East Lake City and the University of Utah. Inducted May 9, he was formerly stationed in Fresno California.

Services Held for Mrs Zina Behrman Cook

Services were held Wednesday at 1pm at the Qlines Ward Chapel for Mrs Zina Behrman Cook who died Sunday morning following pneumonia and four heart ailments. Interment was in Rock Point cemetery. Born April 29 1908 in Manassa Colorado she moved to Vernal as a child and graduated from Uintah High School and Brigham Young University with a teacher's degree. She taught in Uintah county for four years. She married Jasper Cook in 1934 and is survived by her husband and two daughters Guyland and Connie, her father of Naturita Colorado, two sisters Mrs Clark Larson and Mrs Earl Behrard, and five brothers Horace Behrman of Tridell, Lowell, Ferdinand, and Melvin Behrman in the armed forces. Also noted: Lt Thomas Isley, son of Mr and Mrs George Isley, promoted to First Lieutenant and sent to Langley Field Virginia on a special mission after enlisting in the Air Corps on December 17.

Services Held Friday for Julian B Mackey

Services conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Second Ward Chapel for Julian Benedict Mackey who died Wednesday from a heart attack. Bishop Gwen Slaugh presided. A trio sang Oh My Father with Carol Hodskin, Lois Walker, and Elizabeth Noel, while Mrs Maury Manwaring accompanied. Speakers included H Walter Wooley and Wallace Calder. Bishop Owen Slaugh gave closing remarks, Mrs Mae Jorgenson sang Absent with Mrs Mable Stagg accompanying, and E J Winder led the closing prayer. (Continued on Page five).

Two Sons of New Commissioner Enlist in Navy

Hayden brothers sons of Mr and Mrs Horace W Coltharp enlisted in the Navy at Salt Lake City Navy recruiting station on November 20 Richard age 20 and Ned age 22 enlisted as apprentice seamen in the Naval Reserve. They have been sent to naval training stations for initial training before joining the United States fleet. Mr and Mrs Sam Rolfe, former Vernal residents, visited here this weekend and returned to Provo on Monday where Mr Rolfe has employment.

Mother Hears From Son Reported Killed

Vermal resident Mrs Bessle Swain receives a letter from her son Lawrence Robert Swain 19 of the US Army paratroops reported killed in action abroad He enlisted in 1942 and departed for duty September 18 later returning to America with injuries he writes not to worry mom and says he is doing fine despite wounds in multiple areas

Uintah County To Receive Salvage Honor

Uintah County will receive a salvage pennant honor for high per person salvage rates. Plans call for pennants to fly from county courthouse buildings for Morgan Piute Rich una Summit Weber and Uintah. Officials consider where to hold the presentation ceremony. The pennants show a WPA emblem and an eagle and measure about two feet at the largest end. Uintah county totals include 1783 tons with 383 tons from Amca, Boy Scouts 30, schools 94, WPA 101, American Legion 25. Al Daniels of Fort Duchesne reports his son Aaron wrote from the Bolomons he is well and excited, having enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 12.
