In the arid West, rainfall is scarce yet flooding can devastate fertile lands. National aid spurred reclamation projects across generations, with bipartisan backing enabling gradual taming of western water sources and mitigation of drought and flood risks.
Two traffic accidents were recorded last Saturday by the Utah State Highway Patrol in Uintah County. Edward Ithmal of Vernal suffered minor injuries after his 1959 Chevrolet struck a horse seventeen miles east of Vernal at 4 a.m. He could not stop or swerve due to a semi truck and trailer approaching. The horse was killed. vehicle damage estimated at 1000 dollars. The second crash, at 6:30 p.m. on a county road four miles east of Lapoint, involved a 1956 Chevrolet and a Plymouth sedan. Lawrence Tom of Whiterocks and James Leo Steele of Vernal were the drivers. damages totaled about 235 dollars. Tom was cited for driving without a license.
Uintah District students begin a four day Thanksgiving vacation this afternoon as classes close. Vernal City completes a ten inch watering line from Maeser to Vernal to Fifth West and along Fourth North to Vernal Avenue with plans to extend to Fifth South next summer per City Manager LeRoy Taylor.
A trailer caught fire near Mirror Lake while being moved from a Jensen project at Mirror Lake to Vernal. Owner Jack Daugherty, Salt Lake City, had transferred the trailer between jobs. Fire started after a flat tire and spread to bedding and clothing inside. Willican Bo Wallis and Lemont Johns helped, but fire department arrived to control the blaze. Estimated damage ranged from 1500 to 2000 dollars.
Coach Grant Moser trims Uintah basketball roster from 30 to 15 with three cuts more before the opener. The Utes play Meeker on December 4 if Cowboys football advances. Moab Devils at home December 6. Carbon High away December 10. A four day trip includes Wasatch at Heber December 15 followed by South Summit Weber and Ogden High. Juab December 21 and South Summit December 22 at home, Uintah Alumni December 30. A multi denomination community service is planned in Vernal with five churches organizing a joint Thanksgiving morning program. Clergy from First Bay Kingsbury Congregational Joans Chiat Mat ter-day Balnts St Bal Episeays Amel Assembly of Cindelren ve bry Veer wall poets and choir members will participate. The event features readings from Reverends, hymns, and a benediction by Bishop Harald E Hullinger with Kiwanis and local civic groups aiding decorations and support.
Santa Claus will fly to Vernal next Saturday December 4 to meet children eight years old and under at Vernal Airport and then go to Vernal Main Street Christmas lights project. Jaycees and Vernal City coordinate. hope Santa meets youngsters at the National Guard Armory if ready.
Kenneth Ashby, a Uintah High School junior, topped ten contenders to win the local Voice of America contest Tuesday afternoon. Sally Burgess placed second and Paine Lundell third. Finalists included Lee Caldwell and others from Uintah and Union schools. Winners will be honored December 1 at a banquet and speeches broadcast on KIAM, with state and national competition plans and scholarships outlined.
The Knighthood of St Gregory and Papal recognition will be conferred on J Meagher Sr a Vernal resident for over fifty years The ceremony will be led by Most Reverend Duane G Hunt at St James Church on Sunday December 8th at 4 p m Meagher a lifelong Catholic has supported the church since his arrival in the Uintah Basin helping St James Church grow from a small community to a substantial parish with a resident priest
Thanksgiving gatherings center on Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Baucum and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Voorhies of Vernal with Wanda Baucum and Lt. Boyd L. at Butte Mentanz. A reception follows the ceremony and invitations extend to friends and admirers of Mr. Meagher.
Chris McKinlay was elected to the Utah Automobile Dealers Association board of directors at a Salt Lake City convention. Eight directors serve statewide. Vernal attendees included McKinlay of Bagin Chevrolet and other local dealers. convention speakers included Horace Henderson and Neuman C. Patty, with Patty Motor Company in Salt Lake City elected president of NADA.
The new Vernal City Uintah County planning board held its first meeting last Friday. Wiley Baucum was elected chairman and Hugh K Richonsa Napoli s was named secretary. Members include Donchardson Vernal Curtis Dudley Jenzen and J Ferron Hacking Magser with Davis Morrill Tridell present. The group will pursue a long range city county plan including zoning parks and recreation. The secretary was tasked to study other boards and bring maps and past Vernal planning efforts to the next session. A muster plan for an ideal city will guide future work and funding approaches remain undecided. The board hopes for public support and will schedule further meetings once information is gathered.
Six new members joined the Uintah Duchesne district scout committee at Monday’s meeting. Glenn H. Cooper elected finance chairman with LaVar Moffit as member. Kenneth Peck and Arvin Nelson added as neighborhood commissioners. Sack Dexter named readership and training chairman. Stanley Welsh named organization and extension chair. Carl Holley to transfer to Rita field area after current term. Committee calendar lists camping, Week activities, pre-communal exercises, and district events for coming seven months.
