Armory completion delayed awaiting more material

Vernal's National Guard armory, nearly finished since August, is held up for roofing doors windows controls and painting. The structure covers 7114 square feet at the corner of Firth Fast and Second South. Final interior work includes assembly hall 56 by 91 feet 10 inches and two offices with several rooms and rest areas.

Bill C Thomas Loses Hand In Saw Accident

Vernal lumber mill operator Bill C Thomas lost his right hand up to the wrist when his sleeve caught a carrier and pulled his hand into a large circular saw. He was treated at Uintah County Hospital after transport by his brother and partner Kenneth Thomas. The Dry Fork mill is owned by Thomas Lumber Company in partnership with Hill. Byron Thomas, another Vernal brother, also works in a separate saw mill. In a separate incident Bryce Caldwell sustained a fractured and crushed vertebra after a fallen tree injured him while operating a Caterpillar at East McKee Draw for Caldwell Timber Company owned by his father Ernest Caldwell. He was treated at Uintah County Flagpole.

Vernal City Council Adopts Police Appointment Amid Meetings

The Vernal City council approved Harold Alexander as a police officer filling the vacancy created by Jack L. Boren's retirement. LeRoy Taylor will serve again as acting chief. The body also voted $100 to the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce for Christmas decorations and Santa visits on December 4.

Funeral Services For Mark Cook Friday

Funeral services for Mark Nuttall Cook 67 Ashley will be Friday at 11 a m at the Naples LDS Ward Chapel. He died at Uintah County Hospital Monday at 10 05 a m after a heart ailment. Born April 4 1887 in Wallsburg he came to Vernal in 1891, worked sheep, owned a Glines farm, and served an LDS mission to West Virginia. He married Amy Remington June 20 1913 in the Salt Lake Temple. she died November 11 1918. He later married Ada Rasmussen died May 18 1948. then Gladys Karren June 20 1949 died. On November 24 1982 he married Della Chivers. He served as Mutual Improvement Association president at Naples and was a Sunday school teacher and high priest at death. Survivors include his widow, son Morris B Naples, daughter Leah Lamoileaux Vernal, two foster daughters Dianna Rae Chivers Vernal and Teva V Long Bonanza, ten grandchildren and seven brothers John Roosevelt Continued on page 8

Santa Claus will visit Vernal on December 4

Santa Claus walk will come to Vernal for his first visit of the season on Saturday December 4, planned by the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Jaycees will handle decorating and lighting along Vernal Main Street. The Retail Merchants Committee hopes Sonte will return to the city before Christmas.

St Pauls Fall Carnival Adds Bazaar and Food Sale

St Paul Episcopal Church plans a Saturday Fall Carnival in the meeting house from 4 to 9 30 p m with bazaar food sale comic book sale fish pond and pie and soft drinks. Chili and hot dogs served 6 to 9 p m. All parish groups join under a chair couple to run the event inviting the public to contribute suitable items for the bazaar while enjoying cooked foods and desserts.

Bids Opened on Diversion and Dam at Ashley Creek

Bids were opened for a diversion and dam from Ashley Creek into the High Line Canal at the mouth of Dry Fork after the wet season. The contract was awarded to Murray Carniegel Company for 28024 dollars.

Funeral Services for J Goodrich in Vernal

Funeral services are held Thursday for Josephine Merrell Goodrich 632 at the Neples Ward Chapel. She died Monday at home at 3 p.m. Born October 6 1882 in Cache County she moved to Ashley Valley in 1883. She married Lewin Henry Goodrich October 1 1890 in Logan Temple and survived by seven sons, one daughter, two brothers and four sisters with interment in Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery.

Grass roots groups from four states plan to contribute to publicity funds for the Colombo River Store project. Prandsiad hw representatives of Ele Cour upper basin states met in Portland on March 23 with officials of the National Reclamation Association to discuss coordinated information and promotional efforts.

Four Utah auto dealers to attend annual convention meeting

Four Vernal automobile dealers will attend the 27th annual Utah Auto Dealers Association convention in Salt Lake City. Chris McKinlay Ron Showalter Slaugh Motor Co and Vic Waite will be listed as delegates with McKinlay a director nominee. Horace Henderson NADA official will be keynote speaker.
