Postmaster J Young Jr announced the Vernal federal building bid won by A M Lundberg of St Louis Mo for 39048 dollars. Bond set at 20000 with completion within one year as plans call for native asphalt and an adjoining addition likely funded next summer.
Tuesday was the close of the filing period for the school election ballot to be held on Wednesday December 3. In district No 2 Vernal incumbent William Siddoway filed with Clerk A W Goodrich. In district No 4 covering Moffat Fort Duchesne Wilson Randrett Ouray three candidates filed: 3B D Colton Jr seeking reelection W H Donaldson and Francis M Ackley.
The December issue will include a new 4 brand column listing stock brands with ear marks, name, and address for $1 per year. extra brands 50 cents ear marks 25 cents. Subscriptions offered as a promotion to boost local stock ownership visibility and aid in locating owners of stray stock.
Lincoln of Portland the Kiwanis national rep spent days in Vernal to plan a new chapter. A Monday and Tuesday directors meeting at the Bank of Vernal was followed by a Wednesday luncheon at Vernal Confectionery where 22 local business leaders attended. Officials noted 35 members needed to form a club and decided to postpone immediate organization while continuing local meetings to build interest.
The Consolidated Mining Corporation of Danver Colorado has taken over the old dredge above Jensen. Manager A B Trumbull has hired twelve men to reconstruct the dredge and erect new buildings. They plan to dredge for gold once it is running and expect machinery to improve flour gold recovery, with a later oil mining machine to be installed.
Mr and Mrs George H Harrison of the Vernal Express report James H Wallis executive secretary of the Utah Public Health Association is recovering after a severe operation at S D U hospital following a fall on a darkened stairway at a Levan school where he was directing a clean school contest. He remains confined to bed but shows improvement.
George A. Slaugh sent the first parcel post shipment of turkeys from Ashley valley. Two hundred birds went to Salt Lake City and he plans to ship fifteen hundred more. He notes turkeys averaged twelve pounds this year, about two pounds heavier than usual, and says he is always satisfied when turkeys average ten pounds.
C. C. Larson and son of Roosevelt received a car load of turkeys in Vernal from Price on Tuesday and another car at Roosevelt. One car was sent to Philadelphia and one to Los Angeles. Price paid 22 cents f o b Vernal and Roosevelt. First grade birds dressed 60 to 70 percent.
Harvey Daniels was brought from Park City by Sheriff L Richardson on a statutory charge. He was arraigned before Justice N J Hansen, waived examination, and bound over to the district court. Bond set at $1000, not yet furnished.
Federal Judge Tillman D. Johnson sentences Eddie Verhols age 21 to three months in Tooele county jail for robbing the Myton post office after stealing 26 from the cash box. The judge notes the boy left school after sixth grade and worked on his father's farm for room and board and says fathers employing such boys should share wages.
Albert Snow, a business visitor from Jensen, stopped in tows Saturday and made a donation to the Soldier Memorial.
Utah public health chief Dr C N Jensen praises the Christmas Seal Sale work of the Utah Public Health Association. He urges school superintendents to mobilize students for health education, disease prevention lectures, and funding via penny seals to support health services and nurses in districts.
The Ashley National Forest will, by act of Congress, conduct the agricultural census in Uintah and Daggett counties. Supervisor Charles DeMolly Jr and forest rangers will administer a 158 question questionnaire to farmers. The census must be completed by February 1 1926, marking the first time forest officials perform the task.
The Second ward Y M C A staged a character party at the Vernal First ward chapel on Wednesday evening. Groups dressed as special characters took part in the arranged program while a large crowd of ladies enjoyed the event.
The Utah Refining company prepares a drilling rig in Vernal with operations to start soon and continue day and night until testing completes. Public stock is available in limited blocks, with strong optimistic sentiment from geologists about locating the test in the heart of a closed structure.
G N Bennion, laboring in Kansas as a missionary, writes of appreciating the Express and its home news. He says he reads the Express every day and that the home news is always the best. He notes Missourians in the mountains are not content, but he is blessed by his mountain home.
One night last week a meteorite lit the sky with an intense white flash over nearby territory, lasting seconds. The next evening a slow red meteor crossed the western heavens near Taylor Mountain, its head about a foot wide and the light trail roughly 100 yards long.
On Monday four Vernal physicians worked with National and State health boards aided by graduate nurse Mies Metta Nelson from Salt Lake City. About 100 babies and small children were examined by the doctors and Miss Nelson during the visit.
At Armistice day close a rousing meeting occurred in the Commercial hotel lobby as 34 new members joined Witbeck post No. 11. John C. Booth, state commander, spoke on applying for the soldiers bonus. Officers elected for the next year: Adair Tyzack commander, Robert Johnston vice commander, John Stags chaplain, Dr. H. E. Rich historian, LeRoy Odekirk sergeant-at-arms.
Mrs. S. L. Rudge of Maeser received $2 from William Mort of Atchee Colorado to aid Uintah county soldier memorial fund.
Ambrose Noble McKay, general manager of the Salt Lake Tribune for 15 years, died in Salt Lake City on November 18 after a brief illness at age 56. A Canada native, he spent his life in Cheyenne Denver and East Lake City and was recognized as a leading figure in American newspapers. He was noted for public spirit and constructive work for Utah and the western states.
Thursday afternoon Jos Peppard manager of the J G Peppard seed company at Roosevelt was in Ver nal and released 66 crop mortgages at the courthouse. He plans a large alfalfa seed operation, recently purchasing a big Roosevelt farm to grow substantial alfalfa seed.
A rough midnight trek by Eph Birchell Loyal and his sister Arda from Hill Creek to Charlie Brown’s to seek help for their ailing mother Mia, through uninhabited, howling country. They reached Mr Blanks and returned with aid. mother Mia is currently not in danger.
Delivery of the 1925 motor vehicle license plates is delayed about one month and not expected before December 18, according to H. E. Crockett secretary of state. About 86,000 pairs of numbers are ordered for a similar pattern with a green background and white lettering as used in California.
Geologists and engineers traveled to Rangely to select a site for a new test structure near Emerald Oil's field. The proposed site lies about 3 ½ miles southwest of Rangely on land held by locals. Three California firms are involved and preliminary reports are favorable. Local interest grows as plans include testing the Dakota sand with a 8560 foot climate estimate and drilling slated for spring.
Dr Harvey Coa Hullinger turns 100 on Tuesday December 2 1924. Friends and relatives in the Uintah Basin are invited to a 2:00 p m program in Orpheus halls featuring Good Old Songs Naples chorps Messia Prows and company a presentation by Dr Homer E Rich readings by Mrs Mary Sander and a segment on The Good Old Days in Ashley Valley with Bishop Joseph A McKee and notes on Ye Step Dancers and Fiddlers with listed performers.
The Ashley Valley Oil company filed incorporation articles with capital stock of 1,600,000 shares at 10 cents each. Officers listed: R. C. Hills as president, James H. Ball as vice president, and W. H. Loresy as secretary.
Annie Wiest a 14 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Weist who was severely burned recently and saved her life by wrapping herself in a bed quilt is gaining strength rapidly and is able to be up in her room She has taken a few steps around the room Her bravery at the time of the accident and during her fitness is most commendable.
The Uintah county farm bureau Western division shipped two carloads of turkeys from Price to Peter Fox Sons of Chicago. Fred Matthews and Mr. Kirk oversaw grading at Fort Duchesne and in Price, with better condition expected for eastern markets. F. O. Lundberg accompanied the shipment to Chicago to handle the sale and top price.
