Clair Hopkins, operator of the Commercial Hotel in Vernal, was elected president of the National Highway 40 Association at the annual Elko Nevada convention. Vernal and Uintah County figures dominated the board as Ken Sowards became director and other locals attended. The group discussed filming U S 40 a George R Stewart book and debated toll roads as a potential solution.
Frontier Airlines announces a new winter timetable through April 1956 with Vernal improved commuter service to Salt Lake City and morning flights to Albuquerque Phoenix Dallas San Antonio and Houston. Flight No 3 now departs Vernal at 12 15 p m for Salt Lake City arriving 1 20 p m Flight No 24 leaves Salt Lake City at 6 00 p m. allowing over four hours layover. Additional services include Flight No 11 to Grand Junction and southern points at 8 23 p m with Flight No 14 returning through Vernal at 10 36 p m for Salt Lake City.
Mrs. L. R. Lowry and daughter Linda from Salt Lake City arrived in Vernal on Thursday to visit her parents Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Siddoway. Mr. Lowry plans to join the family for Thanksgiving.
The Vernal Express will publish early next week with the publishing day moved from Thursday to Tuesday to precede Thanksgiving. News items should be submitted by Monday, and advertisers are urged to place copy by Monday afternoon for inclusion in the Thanksgiving edition.
An interdenominational Thanksgiving Day service will be held November 24 at 11 a.m. in the Ashley Valley Junior High auditorium. Vernal Kiwanis club president G. Red Roberts announced the second annual observance sponsored by the churches committee. Last year 300 persons attended and this year is repeated by public demand. City churches are asked to supply speakers and attendees are urged to donate food or a jar of trust for Christ ministries baskets for needy families.
Steady snowfall gripped Blane Basin as Vernal endures extreme cold with record lows across Utah. Vernal reported one below zero official, while porch thermometers read 12 to 13 below. Elk Mountain ranger station logged a foot of new snow at 9 000 feet, and 18 inches lay between Green Dale and Summit Springs. Blizzards closed the Vernal to Denver corridor and sent travelers to describe the trip as the worst they had known.
Rex J Morgen head of the Bureau of Land Management in Vernal left Saturday to attend a week long supervisors training conference in Cedar City. Attendees include district range managers and state office personnel from Utah California Nevada New Mexico and Colorado.
At the Legion Hall the American Legion Auxiliary heard reports from the National Convention in Miami Florida in October presented by three guests including Eve Ashton district president Florence Lott and Fandy Felter. The meeting conducted by Mrs Evelyn Slaugh announced a Christmas gift program for hospitalized veterans with packages to be wrapped labeled and deposited in Mrs Be Ashton's office by December 1. A letter of appreciation was proposed for Mr and Mrs W S Powell who donated a flag for Uintah High School via the US Government through the American Legion.
Uintah County will receive 3512.70 for public schools and roads from Ashley National Forest receipts. The Intermountain Region includes Utah Nevada Idaho and Wyoming forests. 25 percent of National Forest revenue returns to states annually with county shares based on land earmark and sources include timber sales grazing fees and land rentals. Gilbert B. Doll Vernal Ashley National Forest supervisor notes modern economical timber protection methods.
Road work on the Vernal to Manila highway is paused for winter with about 16 miles in good condition from Vernal to Manila. Crews near Kabell Gorge cut through rock while a 11 inch snow layer remains. Completion expected next spring with 18 miles more to finish and possible federal funding shifts to speed completion.
Glade Sowards, inspecting a gasoline pump in Lapoint, had a V belt slice through the first joint of his finger tearing bone and leaving the joint attached by flesh. Ernest Caldwell, under a stationary conveyor, was caught when a clutch started the chain tearing off a nail and splintering bone, with surgeons hopeful for normal use after healing.
Sen Arthur V. Watkins of Utah arrived in Washington and said he opposes introducing a new Upper Colorado Storage bill this session. He favors amendments on the floor or in conference and would not send it back to the Interior Committee. He expects Colorado Governor Ed Johnson and Rep Wayne Aspinall to back the Denver conference results.
Maeser Town Board to nominate two members at an election meeting on Wednesday November 30 at 1 30 pm in Maeser School town clerk E Grant Parrish announced. Expired terms belong to LeRoy Carroll and Morgan Merkley. Taxpayers urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs LaVell Manwaring of Naples received official notice from the First Presidency that they will leave for the Tongan Mission early next year. Mr Manwaring, an experienced builder, will aid in erecting a church school and seven to eight chapels planned for islands in the Friendly group under Wendell B Mendenhall, building committee chair. They will also participate in building work.
In the Book Cliffs during deer season a large brown bear was shot. The animal had its upper jaw missing or chewed off, puzzling hunters how it could feed. Companions suggested possible feeding methods as they watched the injured bear.
The U S Department of Agriculture cites a one third rise in alfalfa seed production and a large national stockpile for a price collapse to the lowest level in fifteen years. Utah reports 1955 yield 300 lbs per acre versus 25 1bs last year with national average 138 lbs.
