Strady Improvement Reported in Meid West Section

W N Preas assistant cashier of the Hank of Vernal and newly elected councilman returned from Denver Kansas City and other midwest points. He notes farmers struggle to dispose of immense crops and pastureting corn rather than gathering it with feeders in the fields. Meats have dropped and a slow but steady improvement is expected to reach rural communities. Preas was in Kansas City during the three days of the American Legion meet with notable attendees from around the world.

Christmas Story Contest Prize Rules Published

The Vernal Express announces a Christmas edition on Friday December 16 1921 and invites Uintah County public school pupils to submit one best Christmas story up to 1200 words. First prize five dollars second prize three dollars. Each entry must be signed a pseudonym and include the pupil s real name and address in an envelope.

Vernal Pears Shipped to England From Hacking Orchard

James Hacking, owner of 33 Sheldon pear trees, shipped fruit to California, Denver, Kansas City, New York and Omaha. Despite a late freeze reducing yield, his pears were praised as delicious. He notes two cases once arrived in England in fine condition and were rated the finest the recipient had tasted.

Contract Awarded for Fort Duchesne Vernal Road

The Fort Duchesne Vernal federal aid project was awarded to Waratch Trading Co by the state road commission on November 8. The low bid of 41 609.05 includes engineering costs for a 6.7 mile route with grading and gravel surfacing. Work must be finished within 150 days. five bidders ranged to 82 303.72. Estimated cost by federal and state government is just over 56 000.

Schools Parade Monday for Swimming Pool

Five hundred students from Central School Willcox and Uintah Academies marched Vernal streets led by the Vernal band to show support for a municipal swimming pool. Dr H E Rich drum major wore a bathing suit and carried a sword as baton. Each school carried a banner declaring we want a Swimming Pool. The piece argues a supervised pool would better discipline youths and provide safe recreation away from canals and mud holes, urging parents to back and guide the plan.

Burial of First Vernal Boy to Die Over Seas

Funeral services were held for Private Ralph Perry at the Vernal tabernacle, with Lt. George L. Woodbury and officials honoring the fallen soldier born 1890 in Mapleton Utah. Perry died June 25 1918 in France after spinal meningitis and was buried in Le Havre before his body returned home. Surviving family includes Mrs. George W. Perry and siblings Louraine Leonard Lovell Clive.

Vernal dance crowd backs pool plan amid civic drive

A large turnout at the Orpheus dance in Vernal celebrated civic effort to build a city swimming pool. Promoter Dr N E Rich led the event with a burlesque sketch and speakers urged strict enforcement of laws and cooperation between residents and officials. Donations of gravel, cement, and labor poured in from many locals as plans for a 60 by 100 foot pool near the city park moved forward, with costs projected above $2000 and funding to go to the new administration.
