Utah State reports travel expenses for the year ending June 1949 at about 744000, with a motor car pool reducing state-owned passenger cars from 146 in 1948 to 86 by September 1949. The pool includes 41 automobiles and 45 assigned to individuals or departments, mostly outside Salt Lake City, as part of cost-cutting measures.
Regulations cannot be measured until the changes have tean in operation for a period of time permitting comparison with prior experience. Much will depend upon the effectiveness of regulations to control use of private automobiles, the cost of which to the state exacted 367,000, or nearly half the total travel bill in fiscal 1949.
Fred Holtz of Wadsworth attempted to free a skunk head stuck in a glass jug at his home. With improvised “protective clothing” he pried the jug loose, the skunk escaped unharmed, and Holtz kept his nose and dream intact despite the odd rescue.
