New Visitor Center Dedication Set Sunday in Dinosaur Quarry

The Vernal Exprosa issue prints the official program for dedicating the new Visitor Center at Dinosaur National Monument with Assistant Secretary Roger C Ernst and Governor George D Clyde among speakers. The ceremony includes a 325 pm tour and a view of the in place fossil wall with ongoing restoration and exhibits charting the monument’s story.

Uintah District Camporee Brings 106 Scouts to Merkley Park

One hundred six boy scouts and leaders from Uintah District gathered May 23 and 24 at Merkley Park for the Uintah District Camporee. Activities included flag pole raising, fire building, cooking, tent pitching, first aid, signal tower building, and tire changing. Top scout craft honors went to Maesoy First Troop 231, Vernal First Troop 233, and Ashley Troop 236 with high scores. ribbons were awarded for standard and participation. a four-explorer junior staff assisted with camp administration.

Lombard Key Figure in Dinosaur National Monument Center

Jess I. Lombard 52, superintendent of Dinosaur National Monument, led the center’s development from a single staff to a 15-person team over 330 square miles. Since joining as custodian May 1 1944, he advanced to superintendent as NPS expanded the monument. He previously served at Fort Laramie National Monument in Wyoming starting June 1 1939 and earned a forestry degree from Colorado State College completing studies in 1999.

Dinosaur National Monument Visitor Center Dedication Program

The program records the Dinosaur National Monument Visitor Center dedication with times from 2:35 PM to 5:00 PM. Gun Club Casting Contest Sunday in Vernal

Vernal hosts the Gun Club casting contest this Sunday June 1 starting at 2 pm near the fieldhouse. Men women and children will compete in fly and spin casting with prizes from bait buckets to fishing poles. Proceeds support prizes for a big fish contest this season.

Junior Livestock Show Draws Big Crowd in Uintah Basin

The 21st Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show opened with a Saturday horse show presented by Uintah Basin Horse Breeding and Racing Assn. 65 exhibitors entered, including top honors in the 10-year-old Larry Allen’s quarterhorse class and grand champion stallion Dell Stocco owned by Austin Deebee. Additional judging covered thoroughbreds, mixed breeds, Shetland ponies, and a cutting horse contest with seven of ten world champions entered. Two veterinarians inspect animals on arrival to prevent disease spread. judges include Leonard Warne and others from Utah State University and local offices. Over 280 youths showed animals. grand champion was a 1075-pound Mered Ford Fleet owned by Donald Dudley from Vernal area. reserve champion was a Hereford. (Continued page B).

Uintah High announces summer driving program start

Uintah High School introduces a summer driving training program. First class begins at 7 am Monday June 2. About 60 students will be trained this summer, following over 160 trained in the winter program, per Ray Udy.

First Degree Murder Charge Faces Ute Man

Ute man Saknikent, 39, bound over to the Fourth Judicial District Court on an amended first degree murder complaint. Edgar Ungara, 52, of Bennett, was found dead May 14 in a field 28 miles southwest of Vernal. Saknikent pleaded not guilty. Justice Freeman ordered held without bail in Uintah County jail until trial.

County Health Reports In Uintah County Cases

Uintah County reports four influenza cases and one gonorrhea case for the week ending May 23 per the Utah State Department of Health. The health office tracks illnesses to guide public health actions and warning advisories in the region.

Utah oil shale lands patent issued since 1932

Fred W Larson told the Vernal Express early this week that he has taken the first patents in Utah for oil shale lands issued since 1932. The lands are near the White River area, he said.
