Vernal Race Meet to Feature Thrilling Races and Parade

Vernal plans a three day race meet Thursday through Saturday June 12 13 and 14 featuring over 150 top racehorses a 23 mile pony express ride from Green Tower Wyoming to Vernal a miniature rodeo for children under 14 and a Scottish wiltie bagpipe band. Seven races daily include quarter horses and thoroughbreds with rodeo performances between races. About 90 youngsters will participate in the miniature rodeo run by Bernica Hunsaker Tremonton and Vern Oyler. A $4000 matched purse race pits Bing owned Roy Showalter against Holy Sock owned by Woodey B Searle. A four horse pony hitch is also listed.

Record Basin Jr. Livestock Show Sets Exhibitor Record

Over 200 exhibitors participated in the Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show with 1568 entries tying it as the largest show. Fat steer champions sold for high prices, lambs fetched strong bids, and hog and team judging prizes were awarded to FFA and 4 H members amid notable bidders including Green Valley Market Intermountain Concrete and Ashton Bros. The event highlighted top stock by Ronald Dudley and others, with record prices compared to last year and continued judging contests.

Vernal Man Hospitalized In Gun Mishap

A Vernal resident, Dean Collins 43, was reported in fair condition at the county hospital after apparently shooting himself in the jaw with a .22 rifle while rabbit hunting near Little Brush Creek. His stepson Buday Colling found him. an ambulance transported him to Steinaker Draw area hospital. Deputy Sheriff Carl Slaley investigated.

Funeral for Bonanza Baby Darrell Leavitt Planned

Funeral services are tentatively set for Monday for Darrell Leavitt, the three week old son of Mr and Mrs Lowell Leavitt of Bonanza, who died in an auto mishap. Further details appear on page 8.

Vernal Chamber and Manila meeting announced to open bids on the Flaming Gorge prime contract. Ralph Ennis of US 40 Association attended for the Dinosaur dedication and noted a stagecoach run from St Louis to Magic Mountain. Canal Overflow Threatens Ashley Valley Water Supply

High water in the Highline Canal at Dry Fork canyon mouth caused seepage that created a cavern under the road and displaced water pipes. A landslide pushed pipes off line, prompting a traffic detour and emergency bank stabilization with old car bodies and wire rope. Water service was cut for about a week while the canal bed was dredged and sealed with bentonite.

School District Receives Federal Funds Under Public Law 874

Rep IL A Dixon via telegram to the Vernal Express reports a tentative entitlement of 3233.70 for fiscal 1958 under Public Law 874 granted to Unitariy School District. Amount certified for immediate payment is 2425. Public Law 674 provides compensation to districts serving students from federally funded or regia areas.

Vinal Strip Road Bids Sought for Dinosaur Access

State Nead Commission invites bids to surface 4.24 miles of road north of Jensen toward Dinosaur National Monument. Project completes surface from US 40 to the visitor center, distance just under two miles. Bids open Tuesday June 17 at 2 pm at the State Capitol. Completion in 75 working days.

Thousands of Utahns head for streams as fishing opens at 4 am to 2 pm across Uintah Basin with 162 day season. The Vernal Rod and Gun Club and state officials approve 1958 fish planting plan, listing plants at Brush Creek Carter Creek Sheep Creek and Paradise Park to Oaks Park and Francis Creek.

Dedication of New Dinosaur Center Draws Large Crowd

Over 1600 people attended the dedication ceremony Sunday for the new Dinosaur Center as bids for the Flaming Gorge Dam project near Manila were opened Tuesday at 2 30 pm. The government contract covers an arch concrete dam crest about 1180 feet long, a diversion tunnel around 4100 feet, a spillway structure, a three unit powerhouse, and access roads.

Gorge Road Bid Tops Estimate

The low bid for bailing 22 miles of access road to Flaming Gorge Damale te opened last week by the State and Commission was $195,663, about $40,000 over the engineers estimate. Other county bids opened last week ran well under estimates, with quick awards anticipated. The access road would proceed from Greendale Junction northward to the dam site, beyond which only a temporary road is planned. Low bidder on the main road was RM Jensen of Salt Lake City.

County Rites Set for June 18 on Cornerstone Ave

Uintah County commissioners met Wednesday to set county building ceremonies for Tuesday June 10 at 1 pm. Contractor Grant Hansen of Altamont noted staff may occupy the new building by early December with an April contract deadline, possibly January completion. A $50,000 May payment was made. Dinosaur Service received a beer license. Dean Rowland was named county civil defense director. bids opened with Utaty Motor Co winning $8,260.80 for a tandem drive dump track.

iTorseshoe Open Tourney Slated Saturday Here

Vernal hosts the iTorseshoe Open at the city park horseshoe court this Saturday. Qualifying pitches begin at 7 p.m. The top eight players qualify for the main event. A trophy will be awarded to the winner with reserve prizes for other qualifiers. Local pitchers expect strong attendance from noted state players.
