The Nation marks Memorial Day as a day of remembrance for heroic dead strengthening unity across regions. It honors those who died in service to keep the country alive, emphasizing peace, war, and enduring fraternity among North, South, East, and West.
The Witbeck Post of the American Legion will lead Memorial Day events in the Tabernacle on Tuesday May 30 at 10 a m. The program includes band music, remarks by Judge H Walter Woolley, post officers, a 30 second silent tribute, wreaths by the Legion Auxiliary, and the conferring of honorary membership on thirteen Uintah county veterans. After the service, brief military ceremonies will honor graves at three nearby cemeteries with flags, volleys, and taps.
The Vernal Commercial club announces a big three day celebration to run Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, July 3 4 and 5 with a large program of sports and fun designed to surpass past Natal day events.
A crew is straightening Ashley creek at the O D Allen place to keep flood water from spilling south. The main flow moves under Siddeway bridge where the bridge has been raised on piling. A new bridge north of it will carry extra water, and the creamery bridge is weak and likely to be strengthened to prevent cutting access to the main channel.
A snail rolled from a bunch of bananas at the Vernal Market on Tuesday. The bright shell is about 1% inches long and an inch in diameter. the live snail crawled over nearby greens. Mr. Btnon gave the snail to Mrs. M. Logan who plans to keep it among her plants and flowers.
Mary C Sturgeon discusses elaterite in Uintah Basin Utah as a rare hydrocarbon turning into elastic rubber like material. She notes its superior gluing qualities for paints and varnishes, its use in tires, and lists leading companies Insualitea Chemical Aurora Ohmelac Chicago Elaterite Varnish Hubber Los Angeles. Geological notes cover Uintah Basin formations from Eocene to granite and quartzite layers.
Senator Reed Smoot reports to Miss Louise Jorgen sen that treasury investigators think a Vernal federal building of simple character can be built within the appropriation and that market bids may be invited in September. The Auxiliary petitioned Congress with over 1000 names to urge construction this year.
J P Rudy appointed May 10 to become postmaster at Fort Duchesne succeeding Martin R Curtis who resigned Rudy is well known in Vernal and Uintah Basin where he taught school He was a successful teacher in Ashley valley and for years has been principal of the Alterra school where he owns a large farm
Ed D Samuels said Ashley valley sheep herds are in a normal condition and healthier than most areas. M C Chapman of the Fifty Million Dollar Stockgrowers Finance Corp traveled Utah and neighboring states to gauge stock, noting Vernal Ashley valley stock more normal in numbers and ages. He reported US sheep age balance favorable and predicted quick recovery and good wool and sheep prices for the next years without inflation.
Last Friday Resident Engineer T C Parker supervised a massive blast for project No 10 Vernal-Fort Duchesne road surfacing. Two and a half tons of black powder raised the hill and shattered over 10 000 cubic yards of high grade conglomerate for crushing into road surfacing material. Local businessmen from Vernal attended and reported the event as highly rewarding.
Dr David T. Day, noted geologist and oil expert with the Bureau of Mines in Washington DC, was a Vernal visitor Sunday and Monday. He was entertained at Engineer Nile Hughes’s home. After meetings here they toured the Watson and Hillcreek area. Mr Hughes will return Saturday or Sunday.
U S Land Office official N J Buller of Salt Lake City filed for a gas permit covering 2509 acres in sections 6 7 17 18 township 14S range 18E as reported by Albert Halen of the Land Office.
Uintah County officials led by County Commissioner Lynne Ashton and Treasurer W. S. Henderson plan discussions in East Lake City with the state road commission and B J Finch, district engineer, on road plans for Uintah County this year. The county seeks a larger federal aid program than allotted and hopes to fit six and a half miles of road into any possible plan. Talks followed a meeting with the state road commission and a conference was arranged for today.
Fire completely destroyed the V. F. McConkie residence in Maeser about 2 30 Thursday morning. The two story frame home built by Patrick Carrell burned from a west end fire likely caused by faulty wiring. Mrs Pearle Perry and four grandchildren and Miss Maria McConkie escaped in night clothes. Neighbors John L McConkie and Wm Oaks could only stand 100 feet away as flames consumed the house. Garage and outbuildings were saved. insurance covered $3,000 on house and $1 on furniture.
In Ashley valley roads are flooded by irrigation water from overflowing ditches and waste water. Officials say such neglect damages the road and violators should be fined and forced to repair the damage. The Naples road and state road have repeated waste ditches, and authorities may arrest repeat offenders.
Uintah County Beekeepers' Association met with State Bee Inspector Dan H Willman and Thoning Chantry to discuss cooperating with the State Honey Producers association to market product and stabilize prices. Three deputy bee inspectors were appointed to cover Lapoint Fort Duchesne and Lecton Bennett areas while Hillman reports a drop in foul brood with planned inspections to reach every hive. An extra honey flow is anticipated due to large alfalfa seed acreage and simultaneous bloom across regions.
At a Monday evening meeting the Commercial Club decided to install a large radio as soon as possible. The device will receive signals from Boston New York Washington and other distant cities via two 2600 mile range radios. The radio will be placed in the Orpheus on a suitable night for a concert to be heard by a large audience. Proceeds from the dance will help pay for the radio. It will be permanently installed for member use to receive daily news and broadcasts.
Frank Billings in the Jensen district reports excellent results using a King road drag attached to a four horse leveler. The device fits between wheels, allowing one operation to level and drag. Billings says four horses can pull a leveler-equipped drag, with roads leveled from the K raugh to back last week.
James Marshall, president of the Uintah Beekeepers Association, urges all bee owners in Uintah County to study state apiculture laws and report hives to inspectors. He warns fines for noncompliance and explains disease spread from small and weak colonies, urging care to protect the honey industry and local revenue.
Civil war veteran and early Emery county settler Charles Burch died May 14 1922 at Lapoint Utah aged 76 He was born November 11 1845 in Indiana. Survived by four children Viola Cox Pocatel lo Idaho Sylvia Blackburn Lapoint Utah Albert Burch Emmer Pratt an His wife preceded him in death 29 years ago Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Lapoint ward with Bishop Roy Taylor presiding and prayers by William Sprouse and David Wilson Elders Haydon Foster C J Thompson and Bishop Taylor spoke The body was taken to Lawren ton Utah for burial Accompanying the body were Mrs Blackburn and Mrs Cox from Lapoint and Pocatel lo respectively
