Utah Delegation Pleads for More Upper Colorado Funds

Utah officials led by Governor Clyde urged the House Public Works Appropriations Subcommittee to boost funding for the Upper Colorado storage project. They argued for 86 million dollars to advance Glen Canyon Flaming Gorge and Navajo dams, plus allocations for Vernal Unit and Colorado components, to accelerate orderly construction.

Recent Storms Bring Moisture to Basin Farmland

The large rainfall across the Uiniah Basin over the past two months revived the range and aided irrigation. Higher elevations gained snow providing water for early summer. In the southern county moisture reached 36 inches in places like Randlett and Abe Hatch ranch on Willow Creek, while Watson section stockmen note heavy rainfall. Diamond Mountain and Blue Mountain also show moisture gains.

Vernal Express Mail Delivery Set Earlier

A number of requests have been received at the Vernal Express office from subscribers on rural routes that they may receive their papers on Thursdays. To accommodate these requests all copies of the Vernal Express due for making city rural and out of town will be in the Post Office Wednesday evening. Copies will be available to distributing stores and news boys as usual on Thursday.

Design for New County Building Meets Uintah County

Uintah County Commissioners held a meeting in which Salt Lake architect Lorenzo Young was chosen to develop plans for a new county building to be built near the old courthouse. The plan echoes local structures like the Field House and Vernal Hotel and follows a previously rejected city county building concept. Delegation members pressed for a road on Diamond Mountain and discussed Merkley Park sprinkling system maintenance. County offices will gain a 10 percent pay raise and revert to Saturday closures, with weekday hours 8:20 am to 5 pm. Chairman Orville Swain presided. other commissioners were C. D. Dudley and Grit Southam. Clerk Charles T. Pope attended.

Flaming Gorge-Dinosaur Contracts to Bring Payroll to Area

Contractors prepare for multiple Flaming Gorge projects with 200 to 300 workers expected. Bids open today for eightmile extension funds at Flaming Gorge camp and a June bid for camp construction. Plans include dam components, power house, and a 120 foot tunnel with a sustained crew of 24 to 30 per shift.

Uintah Basin Jr. Livestock Show opens Tuesday with over 100 exhibitors. The event features beef sheep dairy and hog shows, a large horse division with 37 entries, and special acts by George Pitts Uncle Roscoe Grover and other entertainers. Uintah High School closed an other year with an awards assembly honoring students for outstanding school and community service and personal achievement. Coleen Pulley and Clair Batty won Gardner Watgnes and Reader's Digest Awards as top scholars. Coleen also earned the University of Utah Honor Scholarship and Clair a Utah State University 4 .¢ scholarship.
