Two Deaths Raise Uintah County Toll to Five

Uintah County records its fifth traffic death of 1957 after a Sunday morning one car crash near the Gateway Cafe left three local residents injured or dead. Victims include William Albert McCurdy 28 of Vernal and Betty Taylor 28 of Vernal who died from skull fractures and crash injuries. Her husband Taylor 27 remains in critical condition. The wreck occurred at 3 40 am as the speeding vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, leaving skid marks and ejecting occupants. Identity of the driver was not known at report time. Funeral services for the Taylors were planned in Vernal with local officials assisting. Survivors for McCurdy include his widow and his parents.

California Woman Demolishes Auto East of Jensen

A 1950 model car driven by Della Mae McClelland of Garden Grove Calif was total wrecked Saturday at 1130 PM, 34 miles east of Jensen on US 40. The vehicle left the road twice and rolled multiple times after losing control, with an estimated 50 mph speed. McClelland suffered shock and bruises and was cited for failing to keep the vehicle under control.

Swimming Pool Opens Memorial Day at Noon in Vernal

Vernal's municipal swimming pool will open Thursday at noon with regular hours 1 to 7 pm weekdays and 1 to 8 pm Sundays. Admission 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for youngsters. wading pool free. The Bureau of Reclamation to open bids Tuesday for a 6 mile road from Linwood to Dutch John Flat serving Flaming Gorge community and dam area. Low bid from Van Wanks Geard Construction Co of Vernal at 504,642 with other bidders ranging to 630,076. Vernal Race Meet Sets High Power Radio Upgrade

VEEL Radio will boost output from 250 watts to 1 kilowatt for Vernal Race Meet coverage on June 6 to 8. A 200-foot tower will replace the 160-foot Preserit tower, four miles north of Vernal, improving reception beyond the city. Thoroughbred races from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho run Thursday to Saturday at the Fairgrounds with eight races daily starting 1 pm and purses totaling $3,000, plus a $380 7-11 Handicap final on Saturday. Over 100 horses have registered. local competitors are expected to attend, and a Saturday dance at Imperial Hall caps the event.
