River Tragedy Hides Two Bodies After Drowning
Searchers failed to recover the bodies of Hank Stewart and Thomas McKenna after they drowned while crossing a swollen Green River six miles below Ouray. The boat swamped as they hauled a heavy disk harrow and corn planter tongue. McKenna tried to save Stewart, then disappeared. Sheriff led searches in Vernal and Roosevelt, with boats and dynamiting efforts hampered by high water. Stewart, a rancher, left a widow Effie and children Arden and Eva. McKenna survived by his widow Fannie and two young children, with other relatives noted. Family and witnesses described the tragedy as rescuers combed the riverbank for miles.
