Vernal Race Meet Opens Friday at Uintah Fairgrounds
The Vernal Race Meet begins Friday at 5 pm with six days of horse ratings at Uintah County Fairgrounds. Races run Friday to Sunday each weekend at 1 pm, plus May 28 29 and 30. Competitors from Utah Wyoming Colorado and other areas expected in quarter horse futurity thoroughbred futurity derby and club events. Drawing for races set for May 26 at 9 am.

Hopi rain dance and square dancers draw torrential Vernal rain
The Big U Square Dancers staged a two day performance that allegedly brought heavy rain to Vernal and nearby areas. The event featured Mauna Loa workshop directed by Allen Wardle and a concluding program led by Thelma Thacker with performances by The Milo Albillies and various local dancers. Over 600 attendees enjoyed dances, music, and island themed numbers. Community volunteers coordinated setup and clean up at the junior high with thanksgiving and vigor.

District Scout O Rama Saturday at Vernalleigh Gym
The Annual District Scout O Rama will be held Saturday May 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vernalleigh Gym. All Cub Scouts Webelos Boy Scouts and families are invited to enjoy booths theaters Pinewood Derby races rocket contests and other activities. Tickets are nominal and may be bought from the Scouts. Paint truck collision near Vernal on SR 4
At 2 10 p m near Vernal on SR 4 a semi struck a paint truck traveling northbound causing the semi to roll over a guard rail. Driver Jerry Bardine Peterson 42 of Orem and painter Leland Michael Tripp 22 of Orem escaped injury. Damages totaled 9 000 to the tractor and 4 000 to the trailer for the Bunning transfer. The paint truck sustained 200 in damage plus 26 feet of guard rail at 250. The incident followed a paint truck worker and a slower vehicle. Weather and road conditions not specified. A gardening note follows about lawn watering.
