Uintah High of Vernal won the Region Five track and field meet held in Price, beating Green River by a close margin 43 to 33. Grand County finished third, Carbon fourth, Huntington sixth, and Duchesne brought up the rear. Tasker of Green River was high point man with 13, while Uintah’s Watkins and Webb starred in sprints and field events. Seventy-three athletes from across eastern Utah competed.

Indian Chief Red Cap Passes After Meeker Massacre Service
Whiterocks Utah May 14. Red Cap a White River Ute leader involved in the Meeker and Thornburg massacres died after a long life. He helped drive a barrel stave through Meeker’s mouth and later led bands to South Dakota in 1905 before return by federal troops in 1908. Victory Highway resurfacing to begin Vernal to Twelve Mile Bridge
Engineer Reuben B Simpton of the State Road Commission says graveling work will start next week. A gravel plant from Myton will move to the Twelve Mile Bridge area and trucks will haul gravel to the ridge while a nearby camp supports the project. A tractor from Myton will assist the Stelnaker Draw road, with completion expected in about fifteen days. The Green River bridge timber will be selvered and repaired at about nine thousand dollars, with timber to arrive next week. The Gusher Roosevelt section is projected to cost about 80 to 90 percent of the total appropriation, and the completed stretch should become a top Uintah Basin roadway reducing past hazards.

Mrs Lawanda Eldredge and Baby Laid to Rest in Roosevelt
Funeral services for Mrs Lawanda Eldredge and her baby who died in childbirth on May 1 were held at Roosevelt hall Sunday. Bishop Ernest Burgess presided with speakers J W Olson Ephraim Lambert and Ward leader Burgess. Interment was in Roosevelt Cemetery with grave dedication by Orson Mackay. The deceased, born September 20 1905 in Vernal, was the daughter of John Mott and wife of Wallace Eldredge. she leaves a father a brother Barlow Mott and sister Mrs William Reeves of Vernal, with many friends in attendance.

Maintenance Crew Starts Work on Vernal Manila Highway
A road crew led by Ed Oaks began work on the Vernal-Manila route to ready it for summer travel. The Brush Creek to national forest boundary near Manila segment remains under the Bureau of Public Roads for the sixteen mile stretch. Operations aim to wrap by July and farmers and merchants from Ashley valley may visit the area once improvement is complete.
