Vernal Community Peace Meeting and School Graduation Notes

A Vernal peace meeting at Uintah Stake Tabernacle drew residents from across the valley. The Central School graduation program at Workman Opera House May 28 featured numerous students and speakers, with diplomas awarded by County Superintendent N G Sowards. Sheriff McNeil and Don B Colton detained Tabby Weep White and Happy Jack for liquor violations during land-office duties at Whiterocks, with Happy Jack jailed for drunkenness.

Community Day Set to Repair Vernal Cemetery Road

Next Monday is designated as Community Day to repair the road to Vernal Cemetery. The Lions Club under V and Henderson will supervise work to fix the washed out road and improve the resting grounds. Vernal Mayor R Cooper urges all available volunteers to join the effort.

Utah Lions to host Vernal convention for 100 newspapermen

Three dozen Utah Lions clubs plan a welcome for 100 visiting newspapermen in Vernal June 17 and 18 with Lions committee chairs named to entertain. Funeral services held in Naples for Mrs Harriet M Goodrich, mother of A G Goodrich, aged 79, survived by five children.

Asphalt Deposits Near Vernal deemed valuable for road building

Salt Lake contractor Pickering brothers praised Vernal area asphalt as superior to cement for road work. They noted a long track record with Salt Lake City State Street paving since 1893 and 38 years of use with no maintenance. The visitors cited Uintah Basin and Athley Valley as notable, while the party included WC and EL Pickering and John Duder.

Narrow Escapes Near Vernal Highlight Narrow Highway Dangers

Two near fatal scrapes occur near Vernal last week and Monday. Mrs Jesse Haws avoided a plunge when her car left a washed bridge edge and hung on by the edge until help arrived. Mrs Howard Woolley rolled her sedan twice after locking the brakes on gravel. Both drivers and a small child escaped with only scratches and minor injuries.

Lions Club Congratulated on Boy Scout District Support

A congratulatory letter from Dr. O K Hansen of Provo, president of the Timpanogas Council, was read to Vernal Lions Club. It thanks the club for underwriting the quota for a Boy Scout District and praises Scouting as a world wide force aiding youth, with plans to serve the council's expansion.

Earl Lewis arrives Sunday evening in a new Chrysler sedan. He is accompanied by Mrs Ralph Eggertsen and their daughter Deloras of Provo who are visiting Mr and Mrs Louis. Mrs Eggertsen and Mrs Lewis are sisters.

Oil Rigs Southwest of Vernal Report Progress

Western Venture corp drills two wells eight miles southwest of Vernal. Ko 1 reaches 920 feet in oil bearing sands while No 2 at 435 feet. Wells about two miles apart along Victory highway. Under-reaming to 20 feet for water shut off to allow entry into oil and gas sands. Expect oil near the 1000 foot mark per Reed well findings.

Massey Brothers Narrowly Escape Car Turnover Near Vernal

Joseph and Sewell Massey faced a deadly rollover Thursday afternoon while riding a coupe from Vernal toward the Twelve Mile Bridge. A steering gear failure sent the car off course and it overturned several times on the ridge toward the bridge. Joseph Massey was cut above the head and bruised. Sewell Massey escaped without a scratch.

Uintah Basin opens baseball season in Vernal versus Necla

Opening day for the Uintah Basin Baseball League is Saturday with Vernal hosting Necla. Vernal, under Bay Hatch and captain David Curry, prepares on the local diamond aided by businessmen who bought uniforms last season. Necla visits Vernal for the opener before next week's Puchesne game.

Dr Earlests Heads to Wyoming on Month-Long Business

Dr Earlests leaves Sunday morning for Wyoming on a month long business trip. Mrs Sarah Merkley known as Grandma kley has been very ill since Friday and is in serious condition. She is at the home of her daughter Mrs Sadie Coltharp where she has resided for years. During the week Merkleys son Chris Merkley and Duchenne’s wife Nellie Merkley of Tridel visited.

Several real estate transfers occur in Verrall over the past ten days. Al Campbell sold to Otis Weeks and Ensha Campbell sold to Leonard Slough. Flarron Sowards sold in the east part to Alva A Hateh Jr. Vern Shimmin bought Caro- Ine LaBeau property in the north part. Ray Duke bought the Brown corner near the Firet ward chapel and plans a brick residence this fall. Campbell arranging a brick home east of Richard Jensen. Robert L. Pixton rents Joe Santos home west of Red Planer corner. George Cahoon rents the home now occupied by Mr Pinton and will move in June 1. A Cramer bought property south of Richard Jensen and plans to move in soon.

Texaco Opens New Vernon Service Station in Vernal

Texaco Oil Company opens its second Vernal service station at Vernal Avenue and First South near Imperial Hall on Victory Highway. The cement modern station includes Texaco gasoline oil greases auto accessories a tourist information bureau a ladys room drinking fountain and car wash with 10000 pound capacity. Operated in Uintah Basin by Sam Herron and Joe Ratlil of Vernal with an investment around 10000.

Dam Threat Near Scofield Prompts Valley Evacuations

Mrs Maggie Rowley Family Return From California Visit

Mrs Maggie Rowley and family bring their mother Sarah F Thomas back to Vernal after a twenty month stay in California. Mrs Thomas, 81, handled the trip well and is glad to return. It marks 44 years since her first move to Ashley Valley.

Tractor Arrives to Start Grading on Steinaker Draw Section

The state road tractor from Colton summit arrived Friday to begin grading the Steinaker Draw section of the Vernal Manila forest road. The Holt ten ton 65 horsepower machine will handle about five miles of road, with completion targeted by July 1. Ducheene men C L Wilson and Carlos Marsing will supervise under George Goodrich, district road supervisor. Work also began on Jensen Bridge over Green River with a $9000 repair plan set for completion by July 1.

Hilda Burdick and Ray Reader Visit Vernal Week

Hilda Burdick of Meeker Colorado is in Vernal this week. Ray H Reader from Sunshine ranch Jensen left Sunday for Ogden to take his wife's brother B M Helson who has visited for months. Mrs Reader will be joined by Miriam and Marie Cramer of Vernal on return. Mr Reader will be joined by his wife's parents Mr and Mrs Soren Nelson who plan to stay indefinitely. The Nelsons are former Vernal residents and are welcomed back.

Mothers Day Program Delights at Second Ward Chapels

A Sunday Mothers Day program at the Second ward chapel featured Mrs S Herderston and Ernest Winn singing My Mother's Love followed by a violin solo The Angels Serenade by Gilbert Childs with accompaniment by Mr Childs Miss Mirtle Dudley of Jenvenasta Pere missionaries gave an inspiring talk and Bishop Ellington of Salt Lake City sang Face to Face then delivered a highly interesting talk.
