Utah has received far less federal aid for reclaiming its desert lands than other mountain states. Idaho has about 27 million dollars while Utah has just over 3 million despite more people and land. The Uintah Basin is urged to unite to press congressional support for development and reclamation now, with continued discussion on Page Six.

Equipment of the Uintah Canning factory in Uintah county sold by the Bank of Vernal after mortgage take over. The plant will be dismantled and shipped in two days while negotiations continue to repurpose the building. Mrs Edith Elam daughter of Mrs E H Adair arrived Saturday evening from Kansas City Missouri to be at the bedside of her mother who is critically ill after a serious operation the previous Tuesday.
The Uintah academy marks its largest graduating class with 32 graduates in the class of 1923. Reuben Neilson delivers invocation, Victor Hardy presides, and Theora Johnson and Lela Preece offer musical and vocal performances.
A. Cocks division manager for Utah and Idaho with headquarters in Salt Lake City and W. A. Parish district manager at Price toured Vernal and Rangely on an inspection trip. They were joined by Raven Oil president A. A. Brigman and others to assess the area and install two 15 000 gallon storage tanks at Roosevelt.
The Uintah School board met on May 10 to decide on principal and teachers for the Senior High. Supt H S Olson and board member T J Caldwell were sent to secure them. A proposal to dispense with a primary supervisor next year tied 2 2 with Mr Hoeft abstaining. Edith Johnson remains employed to manage expenses without bias, and her work is satisfactory.
The Uintah Academy held its last commencement as a church school with 328 graduates. Principal KB A Jacobsen reported on the school's history and progress and Congressman Don B Colton delivered the address. The event featured performances by the orchestra choir and glee club as students reflected on the institution's long service since 1888.
Otis Weeks buys William Winns interest in the Mott and Winn barber shop. The firm becomes Mott and Weeks in the Coltharp building. Winn retains no building interest and plans to relocate to Burns Oregon after visiting Nevada where his brother Joseph is ill.
On Sunday evening near A. A. Weeks place a Ford driven by Jesse Hatch rolled over after a front spring treak, with Alton 16 and Veley 17 Hatch inside. The car wrecked and two tires were ruined but no one was seriously injured, though all suffered cuts from shattered windshield glass.
Road over Indian canyon to Colton and Salt Lake City is in excellent shape. Travel across all routes is increasing daily and tourist traffic on the Victory Highway is expected to rise sharply this year with more visitors entering and leaving Utah.
A crew under Supervisor Charles DeMoisy Sr. of the Ashley National Forest begins work on the Brush Creek Mountain road. This year’s program allocates several thousand dollars for forest road work across Diamond Mountain, marking the start of the project.
Carbon County high school will hold the 1923 class commencement for 25 seniors. Exercises occur Thursday May 24 in the school auditorium. Hon E S Hinkley will deliver the address. Congressman Don B Colton to give the baccalaureate address at the L D S tabernacle Sunday May 20 with special musical numbers.
A. B. Thomas began duties as secretary of the Vernal Commercial Club. He plans to form a local baseball league from ward and social groups and to advance Boy Scout work, serving as a Scoutmaster in Cedar City. He expects to organize a Junior League within the Boy Scouts and other organizations.
Mothers Day observances in Vernal First and Second wards featured programs and readings. Vernal First ward offered song and reading Just as Her Mother was, solos, a carnation and badge presentation, and remarks by Supt. Olson. Vernal Second ward hosted Angel Mother reading, address on Mothers Day origins, a pageant Our Hearts Tribute with seven characters and tableaux.

A 17 year old named John Smuin was killed at the Country Boy mine near Vernal when a rock slide 80 feet tall buried him. The section had been condemned yet workers believed it safe. two rock barriers failed, five men freed the body, and funeral services were held at Davis Ward chapel with Bishop Alfred Sumper presiding.
Vernal star Jesse Hullinger, nicknamed Tarzan, broke the state javelin record at the interclass meet at B Y U with a 167 foot throw. He later posted 161 feet 6 inches at a collegiate meet and 160 feet 3 inches at a state intercollegiate event, aiming for further record improvements and heading to Fort Collins for an interstate colleges meet.
Willows along the Victory highway south of town and Lover's Lane threaten traffic at the bridge over the draw and the Lover's Lane corner. The problem has persisted for years and worsens annually. A community day is proposed to clear these danger points and address another willow patch near the Red Planer.
The district court for the June term opens with Judge Elias Hanson unavailable due to pressing business in Provo. A large number of cases are set for trial during the term.
County officials and Uintah Indian Service members organize a Basin encampment at Fort Duchesne to expand the annual Farmers' encampment concept. A permanent committee is formed with W L Wook as chair and Loula Thompson leading the program. The group urges broad attendance and community support for a free, education focused event.
Sheriff John Blevins of Moat county and Sheriff Henry Wilson of Rio Blanco county Colorado visited sheepman B. H. Stringham at his Blue Mountain homestead. Stringham said he was given ten days to move his flock into Utah and that Colorado officials were unlikely to grant a range permit this year. Rio Blanco commissioners later ordered no licenses or fees under the act for foreign stock and directed the board to review all applications.
