Vernal plant head D B P Maher reports by week end enough treated asphalt will cover about one third of the Twist project a little over 9 miles extending from the High Line canal in Glinesware to halfway E Hollow. Weather expected to reach warmth by June 10 to start surfacing.
Funeral services for Verda Haws were held Saturday at Glines ward chapel after a three month illness following a mastoid operation. The Glines ward bishopric directed the service with Bishop John B Eaton presiding, a mixed chorus, vocal duets and solos performed, and speakers including Archie Johnson of Uintah stake presidency and Bishop John Hair of Vernal.
The Aaronic Priesthood outing is scheduled for Saturday May 18 with a 7:00 pm start in a natural amphitheatre. A general authority from Salt Lake City will speak, followed by songs and instrumental numbers around a bonfire after dark. Morning archery and contests run from 10:00 am, with meals served and a ward banquet for outstanding participation.
Walter Woolley, Uintah stake Sunday School superintendent, announces next Sunday meetings. At 3 p m in UHS auditorium a meeting for superintendents of ward Sunday Schools. In the tabernacle a general Sunday School conference session with a program for all ages. A 1245 pm special session in UHS auditorium for officers and teachers on The Preparation of the Teacher using films and discussion. General Sunday School board members will attend all meetings.
Congregational Church will hold services Sunday May 19 at 11 o clock with sermon and Holy Communion. A report of the Fiftieth Annual conference held in Provo last week will be given.
Funeral services were conducted in the Naples ward chapel for John E Palmer aged 80 who died Friday after a short illness. Bishop Byron Goodrich presided with Ross Merrill conducting and a mixed quartet performing. Burial details were noted as part of the Naples service. Mary Emma Kay died at 6 25 am Tuesday at her Naples home after about two years of illness. Her services were held in the Naples ward chapel with remarks by Heber Olsen Bishop Byron Goodrich and J N Lybbert followed by burial in Vernal cemetery.
Clyde Oaks aged 25 dies after a weeklong pneumonia illness at the LDS hospital in Salt Lake. Funeral services were held at the Maeser chapel with Bishop Lester Bingham officiating and interment in Maeser Cemetery. He was a Vernal native, Union High School graduate, Bible mission in the Southern States, and a Western Electric student. He is survived by his parents, three sisters and a brother.
Rules governing a special election to name district advisors for the grazing district spanning Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett counties were issued by BH Stringham. The text sets voter eligibility, voting precincts, and the role of district advisors in issuing range licenses and advising licensees under the Taylor grazing act.
Uintah County assessor Lester Bingham reports final 1935 assessable value down by 7303 dollars from 1934 amid drought driven losses in livestock and farm assets. Public utilities assessments not yet received from the state tax commission. increases seen in autos and trucks, grazing land, and other real estate, while farm machinery and sheep drops offset gains in bees and poultry.
Grazing District Representatives Grazing District Representatives Attend Meeting a t EH Stringham and Hugh W Colton as representatives of the Vernal Grazing district No 8 under the Taylor grazing act attended the meeting held in Salt Lake City last Saturday to give final instructions as to how the act will function for the coming year or until a permanent organization can be established Superintendent L W Page of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Agency was also present at the meeting Within the next ten days it is expected instructions will be received to organize an advisory board from sheep and cattle raisers who will allot the ranges to the various users One thing that has held up the Vernal grazing district was the adjusting of the lands of the Uncompahgre Indians reservation It is expected a satisfactory settlement will be made before the calling of the final meeting for the selection of the advisory board and the allotment of ranges.
The city buys two attractive new drinking fountains installed at Uintah State Bank corner and Bank of Vernal corner. They are sanitary and easy to operate, with a check stop flow to prevent waste water.
Trout season begins in Uintah county on Sunday May 19 with most streams open except Brush Creek from Vernal Manila highway to Uintah Daggett line and Francis Creek in McKee Draw closed for the year. Above 7000 feet all streams and lakes open June 18. beaver dam befit breeding ponds noted for Francis Creek and Cart Creek propagation plans.
Mrs Lucretia Jenkins died Saturday after a lingering illness and was buried Tuesday in Vernal cemetery. The service in Maeser chapel featured Bishopric leadership, music by a mixed group, and tributes from family including three sons and three sons in law. She was born August 19, 1884 in Vernal, married Samuel Areclle Jenkins in 1901.
Mrs Ina Ellsworth Jorgensen wife of Oliver Jorgensen of Leota died Wednesday at 2 pm after giving birth to a son who survived Theresie five older children. The deceased was the daughter of Mr and Mrs W P Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held Friday under the Leota ward bishopric.
The judges certify the vote totals for the Vernal Express scholarship campaign. Winners listed include Gwendolyn Roberts first prize, Dean Peterson second, Vinona Massey third, and Ephia Foster, Gene Merkley, Margaret Oaks, Pearl Schaefermeyer, James Faydock, Lois Lybbert, De Vere Simper, Veds Rasmussen, Cal Jorgensen,Thoebe Hatch as subsequent prize recipients. Gwen Roberts of Vernal won first place in the Vernal Express Scholarship campaign earning a six month program at LDS Business College and 25 in cash. Dean Peterson placed second with 825 and Winona Massey of Jensen third with 13. The campaign paid all candidates a commission for reported business and offered bonus checks for steady reporting. The paper thanks all participants for making the effort a success.
May 10 Ward Seeley of Bennett pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace before Justice DeMoisy and was sentenced to ten days in the county jail without a fine. He had been arrested recently and fined for the same offense.
Vernal hosts a town wide Trades Day on Saturday May 25 attracting Uintah Basin shoppers. Merchants advertise deep discounts with a free show from 1230 to 630 pm four matinees and a night dance at Doca Beach with Neva’s Band. Uintah High School Band and Neva's Orchestra perform on Main Street.
The Vernal Congregationalist hosts the fifty first annual conference next May or June with national officers from home and foreign boards and delegates from Utah churches in attendance.
Prof. Lloyd Winn of Uintah high school music department to instruct on all band and orchestra instruments across Ashley valley. Meetings set in Vernal Ashley Macer Gimes Naples Davis Jenkins with sessions for students and parents. Regular rehearsals each Wednesday at 2 00 pm and a concert on Vernal Trades Day May 25 at 4 pm.
The Almetah county Board of Equalization will convene at the courthouse in Vernal on Wednesday May 23 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Additional sessions are set for June 3, 4, 5, 12, and 18. All complaints must be filed on one of these dates.
