A Vernon Utah meeting led to forming a Vernal chamber of commerce with a nominating committee of six to elect a board of directors and set by laws. Members discussed annual operating costs and membership levels, while urging broad local business participation for a stronger regional chamber.
Discovery activity near Indian Beach Areq prompts talk of rapid drilling. Verna L. Farmer Jr, a company geologist, reports a shale fracture zone with oil detected in drilling mud and a gas kick. Schlumberger log planned to gauge extent, while other wells in the Ashley Valley area move toward deeper tests and potential production.

Vernal Lions club elected Harold Reader as president for 1949 50 at the Utah Field House of Natural History. Other officers include Dr. Ray E Spendrove first vice president Howard Calder second vice president C R Halstead third vice president Ralph Rolf secretary treasurer H Walter Woolley chorister Victor Walte tail twister Henry B Millecam Jr Lion Tanner OQ L Johnson Leon P Christensen and Floyd Hall as directors Holdover directors Marvin Smith and Dr Spendlove Also note Mrs Ezra Stewart returned to Vernal after two weeks with Prof I C Heaton of Logan.
Paul J. Ordener, 23, Vernal oil worker, died after a 90 foot fall from the Slaugh No. 1 derrick while hooking pipe. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. in Vernal, with burial in Rockpoint Cemetery Maeser. He left a widow Bette Rae MecNiell and a 14 day old son Raymond Earl, plus his parents and siblings. Several out of town relatives attended.
Vernal Jaycees launched a cleanup at Humphrey Park under the This Is Utah committee. Members arrived at 6 p.m. with rakes and tools, cleaning a park used for picnics and tourism. The group painted and cleared hovels as they prepared the site for the tourist season, with park access temporarily closed until ready. Local committee chair Alvin Kay noted the plan to beautify the area for visitors.
On and after May 10 two percent sales tax applies to motor vehicles and all trailers. LeRoy E Carroll, new county assessor, warns residents to include the tax with title and license fees and to base it on the vehicle price. Information is available at the county assessor’s office or from the state tax commission.
Leon Judson Schofield 71 Vernal native died Friday in a Salt Lake City hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted Monday at noon in Salt Lake City by Rev. George J. Weber. He was born Sept 22 1878 in Chicago and worked as a butcher and storekeeper before retiring in 1937. He and Beatrice Twiteshells married in 1928 and lived in Dividend before moving to Vernal in 1930 where they started Economy Market. Burial was at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Salt Lake City. Survived by wife Beatrice, four children Floyd Holladay Walter Paul Ella Platt, a stepson, a brother and two sisters, and several grandchildren. Notable attendees from Vernal included Mrs Schofield and several relatives.
A planning meeting of Uintah basin scout masters, troop committeemen and institution representatives will be held next Saturday at 8 pm in the Roosevelt LDS stake tabernacle. J Wallace Johnson announces that Dr J G Gones Floyd Loveridge and James Anderson will attend as visitors. departmental work will be conducted. all scouters urged to attend.
Fifteen Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce members will attend the state Jaycee convention in Ogden May 13 to 15 at Hotel Ben Lomond where first place project awards will be presented. State awards judging occurred May 1 in Salt Lake City with club president Glenn H. Cooper and others present. The club entered contests in profit making Christmas activities lighting civic improvement leadership training membership and personnel sports public relations publications and This Is Utah. Four special projects include outstanding all around projects outstanding single project of year outstanding local president and outstanding local chairman. Last year Kenneth H. Sowards led the club to five first place state awards and a first in national competition. Delegates expect similar recognition this year. The Vernal Jaycees have been a highly active civic group in the state.

Lee Mecham 635 son of Moroni and Almira Jane Mecham died suddenly of a heart attack April 27 at his home in Parker Arizona. Born May 23 1883 at Wallsburg he moved with parents to Ashley Valley in 1884 and lived in Jensen until 1906. He married Bernice Peterson July 1 1910 and they lived on the Duchesne river until 1917. From there they moved to San Juan County then to Flagstaff Arizona. He worked for the government starting 1933 and lived at Globe Parker and elsewhere. He leaves five sons and daughters Bilis Maxine Corey Evelyn Freeman Opal Thompson Leland Jay Mecham Ray Mecham 18 grandchildren and two brothers James D Mecham Orem and Robert B Mecham Moab.
Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Lester J. Searle on the birth of a boy on May 4. Mr. and Mrs. Mae McConkle welcome a girl on May 5. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton John Slaugh celebrate a boy born May 8. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Jensen report a boy born on May 0.
A small Shetland pony named Trigger belonging to Annette Batty carries little Sharon Evans along a village street. The pony bolts past Sid West toward the Ashley curve, with Sharon noting the rider could repeat the feat if she is not aboard.
Uintah high school's Men's Glee Club directed by Barnell Hales will present an Evening of Song on Thursday May 12 at 8 p.m. in the Uintah stake tabernacle. Funds raised will start a uniform fund. Theresa Hadlock and Marquita Goodrich assist as soprano and pianist. The program features Negro spirituals religious pieces semi classical and popular songs arranged by Hales.
Uintah stake Primary meeting to be held as a convention this month with a demonstration on the mer’s program. Mrs R A Bryson stake primary president announced. Convention set for Friday May 20 at 2 30 p m in the First ward chapels. All officers and teachers in the Uintah stake Primaries urged to attend.
The Business and Professional Women's club met May 4 at the Uintad State bank and the following officers were elected for the coming year. Miss Winona Massey president, Mrs Rae Ashton first vice president, Mrs H Walter Woolley second vice president, Mrs Delbert Hor Aslo treasurer, Mrs Edger Al easher historian, Mrs Edgar Allen district director.
County commissioners disclosed that work will begin Thursday on the Echo park road linking Vernal to the dam site. Provo district engineer Frank Demming of the state road commission led officials including county chairman Asher Manwaring and county engineer Leon Christensen on a site visit to estimate dam road costs and possible state help. Local business leaders and civic clubs have pushed the project as a key step to ensure Vernal benefits from Echo park dam construction.
Bond Drive chairman announces the Uintah Workers bond effort to fund the county share in a national drive. The committee lists local supporters including Grant Pickup Rendlety Aual UTAY Eevee Moon and Bonanza to back the effort. Citizens are urged to invest in America's future and aid the nation’s welfare.
First annual Utah State Cleaners Assn. convention to be held in Salt Lake City on Monday. Earl Freeman and George P Roth of Vernal Cleaners will attend. Roth, an association director in charge of entertainment, plans to take key staff. Schedule includes 9 a.m. sessions, noon luncheon, 1:30 p.m. annual meeting, and 2:30 p.m. second session.
Funeral services for John Franklin Wilcoxson 82 longtime Vernal resident who died in Glenwood Springs will be held Monday at 2 pm in the Swain funeral home. He lived in Vernal until two years ago when he moved to Glenwood Springs to live with a son Frank Wilcoxson. Survived by two sons Frank Wilcoxson Glenwood Springs and May Wilcoxson Price and two daughters Mrs Trene Hall Vernal and a daughter in Salt Lake City. Burial will be in Vernal Memorial Park.
Postmaster Calder corrected a previous Vernal Express report about aluminum mail boxes. He says boxes can be obtained for one dollar and urges boxholders to use a mail box stand and paint program. He notes the earlier claim of two dollar costs was incorrect.
