The verse by Christina Rossetti speaks of Easter as a day for jubilee and bright awakening. It urges mankind to cast mourning aside and embrace song, light, and lanterns, celebrating Christ the chief reaper who gathers a sheaf of believers.
A Uintah school board special meeting heard a broad delegation of Vernal businessmen and heavy taxpayers urge action on taking over the senior high school since Uintah academy closed as a church school. The committee, led by I Sandor, sought permission to present views on a possible building program and county high school advancement.
The Theological class leads the Easter program at Sunday School this Sunday at 10 30 am All are invited A regular fast service follows at 25 pm Pearl Eaton will speak on Easter at the service
The church will include mite box offerings from pupils during regular Sunday school at 10 a m for missionary work. A communion service follows at 11 a m with Exeter music and a sermon by Rev M J Hersey. The public is welcome at all services.
The public is invited to an Easter program featuring Miss Vera Calder talk Withbur Sowards selection by orchestra vocal solo by Miss Clela Young and special Easter music. Sacrament Meeting follows at 2 p.m. in Vernal First Ward.
Catholic services set for 10 o clock Easter Sunday at the Commercial Club hall with Father D G Hunt delivering the sermon on the Resurrection All are invited to attend.
Regular services will be held at 11 o'clock Sunday morning in their room east of the Golden Rule store. All area residents are welcome to attend.
A special Easter service and concert by the Sunday school at 10 o'clock A M. All are welcome. At 11 o'clock A M a Easter sermon will be preached by Rev. G A Downey, pastor. There will be special Easter music by the choir. All are cordially invited to attend.
Vernal First and Second M I A Conjoint plan an Easter program Sunday at 7 30 p m in the Ver nal First ward. Readings by Mrs Sander violin duet by Miss Elina Cooper and Everett Massey vocal duet by Miss Mima Davis and Mrs C J Neal saxophone solo by Ray Stringham and piano duet by Miss Ruby Wallis and Miss Elva Eaton.
Funeral services were held Friday at 3:00 PM in the open air at the Nichols grandparents home for Myrtle Cloward. Bishop Sylvanus Collett presided with harmon Sewards speaking comfort and Ellis J Ellis offering prayer. Interment followed in Maeser cemetery as Collett dedicated the grave. Myrtle would have turned twenty in June, having been on the vaud since infancy and dying after scarlet fever complications.
A large gathering at the Earl Douglass home near the Dinosaur quarry in Vernal attended Nettla Douglass’s burial on Tuesday afternoon. Born July 26, 1853 in Minnesota, she suffered paralysis for months and died March 24. Survived by her brother Prof Earl Douglass, she was laid beside their father with Rev M J Hersey and J N Lybbert offering consoling words.
Henry Millecam secretary of the Vernal Gun and Rifle club received a telegram from J W Wargen chief deputy fish and game commissioner Springville Utah stating they had shipped six pair of Hungarian partridge by express Watson to be operated in this section of the country and explaining how to do so. The state had previously received 426 Hungarian partridges from Austria through a New York importing firm. They have been introduced in Montana Idaho and Washington and are now the chief game birds of Alberta Canada. The birds will be planted this week from Watson over the Uintah railway in a quiet spot where they can be cared for and nests found. Alb sportsmen will assist in giving them protection until they become plentiful.
Members of the Vernal Gun and Rifle club working at the Rangely oil fields have organized an auxiliary and plan a rifle team. They expect to travel to Vernal to compete with the main club in an upcoming shooting tournament in the near future.
The school board approved a principal salary schedule for the coming year with many reductions. Several principals will shift to teaching roles or accept lower pay at various schools, while a few receive small increases. Some principals remain uncertified and may accept principal positions at reduced salaries.
Justice Irvin Eaton fined Wallace Wall the sum of 65 dollars after Wall pleaded guilty to assault and battery on Ben Morrison at the Orpheus. Morrison said Wall struck him and fractured his jaw while skating, and Wall allegedly kicked him as he tried to rise. Both men are described as powerful and skilled boxers.
Duchesne Commercial Club elects officers for the coming year at its annual meeting. Pres Hobern G W Porter, secretary Rulon Liason, treasurer James Wahlquist, governors Harry Duberteln G V W Billings George J Knoll. A resolution thanks Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce for assistance in boosting the region.
Delegates at the 93rd annual conference will depart Tuesday morning to attend the first session at the tabernacle in Salt Lake City. The event begins Friday morning, April 6, and runs for three days.
Large crowds attended the quarterly conference presided over by Wallace Calder. Talks on Brotherhood and Word Teaching inspired attendees. Uintah academy chorus and glee club performed, closing with Farewell to Thee and Home Sweet Home. The event marked UA chorus last appearance and coincided with Home Sweet Home's 100th anniversary.
Samuel D Nicholson United States senator from Colorado died in Denver at 9 15 PM after a monthlong illness from carcinoma of the liver. He was unconscious on deathbed with family and Secretary of the Interior Dr Hubert Work present, mourned across mining districts and the state.
Washington March 28 one of fifty two surviving veterans of the Mexican war Milachi McCoy aged 94 of Vernal Utah served as corporal in Company D Second Indiana Infantry and in Company CY Fourteenth U S Infantry during the Mexican war During the Civil War he was captain of Company A Fiftieth Indiana Infantry Mrs Malinda Anna Miller of Salt Lake Utah aged 78 is a pensioner as a surviving widow of that war.
Lillian Elder, district home demonstration agent from Logan, will spend one week starting Monday April 16 working in various communities. Her duties include making dress forms analyzing kitchen conveniences and assisting with domestic science problems with plans and help. Further meeting times and places will be announced.
The May carnival and stock show plans are outlined with decorations set and early spring conditions expected to draw large crowds from neighboring towns. Tennis fans prepare as courts are readied for a stronger tournament with teams from all basin areas. Four cars will showcase stock show and Miyestoc exhibits highlighting major industries. Judging demonstrations will occur for boys and girls clubs with a convention at that time, promising the largest crowd at the fall grounds outside the usual fair.
Twenty four members of Uintah county First Ward advanced senior class urged immediate construction of a new senior high school. I Sander led the discussion with I Walter Woolley A Richardson H S Olson and Mrs H B Calder among those speaking. They warned delaying would slow county growth and said they would help campaign for urgent action this year to maintain educational standards.
E. Peters on county agent reports that State Sanitary Engineer Bedell will assist in a statewide clean home and clean town campaign. Farm bureaus across the county organize to use a scoring system with 100 percent goals to guide each community’s plan and meet local needs.
Winn Barber Shop opened in the Col harp building in the store room formunty. The new location will be fitted with modern equipment and provide more commodious quarters for customers.
Former mayor and pioneer of Ashley Valley D. Colton lies at his East Lake City home with his children at his bedside. Reports say his condition is grave with little hope of recovery. Sons Charles H Lew and F left for Salt Lake City as Dr Warren Colton arrives from Kentucky. Congressman Calton did not attend due to illness.
Provo City principals teachers and supervisors heard James H. Wailis executive secretary of the Utah Public Health Association outline plans for the Clean-school contest. Supt H A Dixon announced the school board will award 50 30 and 20 dollar prizes for first second and third place with scoring beginning next week and final judging in early May.
E. D. Smith and farm bureau members are arranging another hog shipment. Hogs will be moved by truck to Watson once roads are passable, as warm weather makes a drive less profitable.
Funeral services for William Oaks Sr were held in Maeser with interment in Maeser Cemetery. He died Saturday at about 85 years old and was father of William H Oaks.
