Frogman Bravesley River to Find Pump

A frogman named Bob Griggs of Ned Wash dived into Green River on Friday with an oxygen tank and recovered a valuable electric motor pump belonging to Orvil Dudley of Jensen. The device, used to irrigate 200 acres on the I. D. ranch, had been dislodged by a recent ice jam and was found with minimal damage.

Empire Club to Build Dinaland Golf Center in April

Dr B Bruce Christian president of the Vernal Empire Club announced plans to construct a new Dinaland Golf and Country Club beside the old building. Work starts in April on a 70000 dollar clubhouse to be completed by summer with dining and dancing areas and golfer facilities. Memberships opening announced.

New Committee Forms to Study Optional 12 Percent Tax

Uniteh County Commissioners voted to create a study committee on a proposed sales tax increase from 4 to 3 percent. Thirty delegates from businesses civic groups and individuals attended the meeting. The committee includes Commissioners Harold and others.

Creek Flow Into Reservoir Triggers Multi Vehicle Crash

A four vehicle crash near Vernal Center involved three parked trucks and a moving 1957 Nash Rambler. Damages totaled 2100 dollars with the 1087 Ford truck incurring 1000 in damage. Other vehicles included a 1950 Dodge and a 1941 International, all Vernal registrations, as repairs prepare for higher spring runoff to fill the Steinaker reservoir.

Two Vehicle Crash West of Vernal Destroys Corvette

An early Friday crash two miles west of Vernal on US 40 involved a 1959 Kenworth tractor semi driven by Jesse James Sholar of Houston and a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. Sholar was cited for failure to yield and Caldwell for speeding as Trooper Ray Herrington investigated. Caldwell sustained minor injuries.

Truck Auto Crash Causes $550 In Damages

An icy Vernal Avenue and 1st South collision Monday at 7 10 p m caused $550 in damages. Roy Thomas 49 of IL East Sth South drove a 1960 Chevrolet while Gary Harrison 19 Route 2 drove a 1956 Ford sedan. Harrison attempted a turn south on Vernal and could not stop on the slick road, striking the truck.

LDS Leader Attacks Undesirable Movies in Vernal Talk

Elder 5 Dilworth Young of the LDS First Council of Seventy spoke at Uintah Stake Conference urging restraint on adult themed films and pornography accessible via services. He urged parents to set high standards, warned against bad company, and noted youths must decide not to view questionable shows. The talk stressed personal responsibility and not adopting world standards, with a continuation noted on page 8.

Forest to Hire 250 For Big Bug Battle

Ashley National Forest plans a spring to mid summer beetle control project hiring 200 to 250 workers from mid April to mid July. Andrew A. McConkle, forest supervisor, told Vernal Chamber of Commerce the effort targets bark beetles affecting 32,000 trees with costs of 4 to 6 dollars per tree for burning infected trees.
